I noticed, while researching 330 vs 325, that the 04 325Ci steptronic transmission has significantly different gearing compared to the 03 325i step. First is only about 6 percent taller (3.45 vs 3.67) but then second is 10 percent shorter (2.21 vs 2) and third is 12 percent shorter (1.59 vs 1.41). Seems it is more of a "close-ratio" box than the sedan. I am curious how this would affect performance. The 2.5 engine is not a torque-monster to begin with... and then they give it a taller first gear(?)... seems counter-productive. Of course, second and third won't drop the rpm like the sedan, though, which would help keep it in the meatier part of the power band. BTW, final gear ratio's are the same in both cars (3.46). Any first-hand experience out there?
