I purchased a 2006 330i, and the only way to control an iPod was to open up the center console and touch the iPod itself. I supposed the alternative was to have wires running out of the console, or perhaps reroute the auxiliary jack to another location.
However, I came across the Scosche iPod RF Remote Dock. A small RF receiver plugs into the bottom of the iPod, and a small remote is velcro'd to the steering wheel. Works like a charm--I highly recommend the solution.
I got mine at Target for under $50.
