sorry i'm a new user and posted this on the end of another thread. didn't mean to do that.

here goes again:

i can't wait. i'm taking ED of my new E92 M3 at the end of july and i'd like to take it to the 'ring. i know that rental car companies are getting more and more unfriendly towards people who take their rentals on the 'ring and i was wondering how far behind the ED program is in discouraging people taking their cars there.
i know a guy who totalled his ED M3 on the 'ring in '03 and it was covered by insurance - i'm just wondering if they've excluded the 'ring since then.
i have talked to absolutely everyone who'll pick up the phone in the ED dept trying to get an english copy of the "general conditions for automobile insurance (550/17 AKB)" that are referenced in the ED insurance documents, but no luck. i have not told them WHY i'm asking, being the paranoid sort that i am.

i have found a german version of the above "general conditions" but it's not of much use to me as my german isn't....ummmm...good enough.

does anyone know for sure if ED insurance is valid on the 'ring? or i guess, more correctly, is it specifically excluded in the policy?

thanks in advance

Yes, the insurance is valid. This was an explicit question from my recenly completed ED that was answered by my BMW rep on delivery at The Welt.

is there an official doc on this or some such? Would make a nice wiki addition.

You are NOT going to find the term " ... the insurance policy that we are underwriting to you is valid for Nurburging..." either in English or German, so I would suggest you take their word for it and while on the ring have fun but not to push you car anywhere near the edge of envelope so you become the first person posting here about suffering damage from wrecking your car in Nordschlief... with personal experience :eeps:

cheers,

The ring is a public toll road. You got tour bus going through there.

Thnx Dave... I didn't know that from my 3 trips there:rolleyes: (Dave's translator to read between the line... stmt = Sarcasm)

Also... Allianz isn't stupid... they know exactly where the Nordschleife is located what it is for..:p

It took you 3 trips to realize that? So that you can come back and tell everyone you drove the ring? I think the autobahn (can you say free, free, free) and the country roads are much more exciting. Can you see the twisties in the GPS? :p

I purposely skipped it before coming home from Frankfurt.

Doesn't the wording say that the insurance is invalid on restricted access toll roads?

if you have any timing devices in your car and reck... they will deny any insurance claim. That I found when digging... Other than that should be ok.

Being cheap is exciting to you? Do you go to the mall and ride glass elevators because they are cheaper than riding roller coasters? The autobahn is a great road to get from point A to point B, but its not exciting, even near V-max, as everyone is very well-behaved and my license isn't in jeopardy. Some country roads are fun, but comparing them to the 'ring is like comparing p*rn on your computer to sex with a real live woman. I've driven the 'ring, and it was worth every penny including the car rental.

Oh, if you don't drive it, you're cheap. It's OK to have another opinion here? Have you ever thought about that some people do not consider that fun? Naw, that's too complicated a situation to think about.

The other day at the local chapter autocross organizer asked me why I'm did not enter. The answer, "I don't find it enjoyable anymore" to spend all day preparing the car and then tearing up the street tires along the way. I could do the same on the public roads on a Sunday morning if I want. Is that answer acceptable to you?

this is in response to lilskel:

that's exactly what i'd love to find out - is there language anywhere in the general conditions that specifically excludes "one way derestricted toll roads" or anything similar like "driving schools", "driver training" or any other wordings that hint at track days. or indeed if it mentions the nurburgring or nordschleife by name.

Take a deep breath everyone. The question is about insurance. I think we know the ring isn't for everyone (nor would most of us ever consider driving on the street like we do on a closed course).

That will be the beginning of the equavalent of Nuclear Holocaust to the BMWED program ;)

Didn't someone already contribute something along these lines?

A certain fellow from the Great White North, by way of the Emerald Isle?
