View Full Version : Stupidest BMW ever?

I was looking at the X6 this morning, and I just don't get it. Less usable seating capacity than a 5 or 3 series, very little usable cargo space, 4900 lbs. of mass, and the best we can say is that it handles well for an SAV.
Maybe I'm being harsh, but if you want something sporty, buy a sporty car. If you want something more versatile, buy an X3 or X5. But to make all the compromises necessary to have a sporty looking (and I do like the looks) SAV coupe seems ridiculous, especially in today's automobile environment.
Heck, buying a nice 3 series coupe, plus a domestic SUV for hauling, which you can buy dirt cheap now, probably makes a lot more sense.

I just found out the X6 has more storage room than a Porsche Cayenne.
If you think back to the year 2000, BMW came out with the X5. A lot of folks thought BMW lost its marbles for building a truck. BMW only expected to sell 100,000 X5's over the first 5 years of production. Instead they sold 100,000 X5's the first year.
The same thing is happening with the X6. Approx. 2,600 were sold the first month of production. No not dealer lot cars, actual customers ordered.
If you look at what BMW has done over the past few years, they consistently prove people wrong.
BMW 645 - An overpriced 3 series. Sales suggest otherwise
M6 - Again sales have done fine
New M3 is almost as much as 6 series fora little performance gain over a 335.
1 series - why buy it when the 3 series is only a little more.
Apparently BMW knows more about the market and understands it better than a bunch of part time posters on a car forum.
I will sit back and watch those who have issues with the X6 be proved wrong. If you read the latest Roudel, it is already starting.
And for the record, neither X3 or X5 I consider sporty. They are both very top heavy and roll like a greek freighter compared to an X6. A lot of the X6's weight is at a lower center of gravity. The new X1 will be a baby X6. If you have ever driven an X3, you should know it is perhaps the worst riding BMW ever built which is one of the reasons why they are dying on dealer lots.
If you can't get past the 5 series design, or the thought of a 5 series wagon , or the bloatyness of an X5, but want all of them combined, the X6 may be for you.
We will be replacing one of the cars in the fall with an X6. The test drive sold us like no other.

The X6 allows me to avoid owning two or more auto's (and save gas and money)....a weekend "fun" car ( X6 is pulling .90g's on the skidpad),sporty enough for me and just about equal storage area to my X3 and twice or more the storage area of just about all Sport Sedans, more than enough utility for me.The X6 will address the needs of many individuals who like the utility of SUV's and want the looks and driving experience of a sedan...the X6 delivers on all counts.Thanks. I can see the X6 for the fairly narrow niche buyer that you represent. The taller platform would certainly be useful for light duty off road use.
On the other hand, I don't see the X6 offering more room than a sedan--the back headroom is claustrophobic, and I don't find the front accomodations any better than a 5 series sedan. At the same time, it doesn't offer much utility either--I can't see doing my occasional towing with it, and the cargo space, while somewhat taller than a sedan. actuallly has a smaller footprint, which is typically more important.
It IS a very nice looking vehicle, though, and I agree that the newer BMWs are now fulfilling the promise of the newer styling initiative that got off to a rather shaky start with the 5 and 7 sedans, and the 6 coupe.

 I have to agree. However I think the X6 represents a course correction. No bangle butts, nicer tail lights, the X5 dash which is the nicest of the bunch. I suspect the new 5/6/7 will gets things back on track.
I am far less concerned about its looks than its lack of visibility. No matter what our diverse needs happen to be we all need better visibility than the x6 provides. That said, I'm sure that some people are willing to buy it anyway.

It's stupid enough for me to change my mind from an M3 to an X6-50i.

I have driven one. The visibility is not an issue although I thought it would be.
The visibility is better than a 6 series vert with the top up IMO.

Yep I agree, I have the 6 series and the X6 is better, the rear veiw mirrors are very good also.:D

I like the X6 a lot. We're considering one as a replacement for the X5, however one of my main sticking points is the visibility issue. I've driven one three times now and every time, it has bothered me. It's really not just journalist BS...

Funny because I did exactly the same thing. I canceled my M3 order as well and changed to X6 50i and glad I did because I will have it in one month which is only a month later than I would have received the M3

I find little point in the X6. However, everyone has their own opinions on the X6. I find it ghastly, and still have no reservations complaining loudly and bluntly to any BMW sales rep that tries to bring it to my attention.

Well I am 6 foot, so I am fairly high up in it I spose, maybe if you are a bit shorter it could be a problem, so you can operate the reverse camera without going into reverse, if you are unsure of the rear veiw, press the button and it will come on. just an idea.

I'm 6' tall and sit high up in the seat, as well. The visibility issue that I noticed really isn't directly out the rear window (it's small, but I think you'd easily adjust). It's more about visibility during lane changing, etc. I'm not sure that it's a deal breaker, but it's certainly something that I've noticed.

Guessing the X3 is dying on dealer lots because it's the worst looking current production BMW available. My god that thing is hideous. Wish it looked like a smaller X5, but then they probably wouldn't sell any X-5's. The X-6 is awefully pointless, but still has a pretty unique style without being an ugly freak. :)

I don't see why and X5 or X6 would be pointless. Compared to an M3, it gets better MPG and is more practical. The X6 is a nice alternative to a 5 series. To each his own.
Why is it the smaller gas hogs like the M3, M coupe, etc. get a pass on practicality?
I think there are a lot of sour grapes on this forum.

I wonder if BMW is going to do better with the X6 than the M3. My dealer told me they are having a harder time then they originally expected and they are not flying off the lots like expected. They currently have 3 M3s and 1 convertible and 2 of the M3s have been then for several months.

Here in the UK, the M3 is having a very hard time, no one wants them, they are gathering dust in the back of showrooms, MPG is fast becoming a "Must" in the UK, diesel is 130P per litre now, yes £1.30= £5.91 per UK gallon:tsk:
Many are lowering there driving hours or sharing cars, big V8 engined cars are not wanted by dealers in PX and they are being offered silly money in PX for them.:(
We see way toooooo much TAX being charged here for petrol/diesel, this government better wake up soon or the revolution will be sooner rather than later.

I have the 08 X5 4.8i and I have to disagree with your statement. Drive a new one for yourself and see what I mean. With 350hp and a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds, the thing is a rocket compared to other SUV's (SAV's excuse me BMW) out there. I have a modified 1996 Porsche Carrera 4 and I must say that although the two are drastically different, I enjoy the X5 almost as much.
Now considering the fact th BWM claims a 0-60 time of 5 seconds flat for the X6 5.0i, I would say that it's going to be a beast. I must agree with you though, the X6 does seem a little iffy in some area's, especially that price tag...ouch!

I have agree with you. One of the reasons for my reversal on the M3 for the X6 is also due to the fact that we own both an X5 4.8 and a 3 series.
I love my 3 series but I enjoy driving my wife's X5 more than my 3 series, the X5 4.8 is a sporty SUV. With this experience it has made me change my mind from the M3 to an X6.

If any company can defy physics it is BMW. They sure know marketing. I absolutely hated this car until I had to see it in person. I've been softening on it every since. Pinch me before I buy one.
