View Full Version : Colorado sales tax?
I'm in California with a daughter going to school in Colorado. 7.25% sales tax in CA. Would there be any advantages in buying and registering a used car in CO?
If she were to be stopped by police would there be problems with CA registration & DL? CO reg. & CA DL? How about this one: Oregon reg. & CA DL? (No sales tax, & very low reg. fee.)
6.7 in Fort Collins (Colorado State University) - the town I'm in is 5.00%, while it's in the 8's down in some places around Denver... but I see no reason for a student to purchase locally if they can get a better deal in their home state - because they are not required to register the vehicle in CO.

Car must be registered in the city where it's going to be used.
Most cities will give you a 30 day or so period to make the change.
It will be hard for her to prove residence in CA while going to school in CO.

it's different for a student. as long as she is a claimed dependent of her parents in CA she is technically viewed as only "visiting" the state in which she is attending school although she might in all reality spend 99.99999% of her time living and staying in the alternate state. many other things besides cars are also skewed iwth this perspective when in regards to a dependent's classifications

students have some kind of pass on that I heard - but it wasn't from a LEO - so it could be wrong. It definitely needs to be checked out - but visit ANY college campus and there are thousands of out of state plated cars in Colorado -each campus is FULL of them.
