I currently own a 98 318i with many many problems. Nevertheless, I am seriously considering the 08 323i or the 08 128i.

I've been told the 318 engine is actually a GM engine (having a hard time even typing that. I have 234,000 kms and it's pretty much on it's last legs and have also been told I am lucky to have gotten this far.

Can anybody verify that and does anybody know the manufacturer of the 323 & 128 engines?

Umm this has to be the most ignorant dumb post that an easy google search would of told you ................... BMW MAKES THE ENGINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BMW has made all of there engines in all of there cars except mini's.

GM built the automatics in the e36's, that's about it for gm products in e36.

BMW may make the engines, but in what country? I'm sure it is Germany, but wasn't there the X5 that was put together in Hungary and the con rods failed, or something like that, because BMW outsourced production??

Hey, welcome to the 'Fest, and sorry for some of the rudeness above.

You're close, GM made the autos that went into several of the 6 cylinder cars in the 90's. I think all the 4, 8, and 12 cyls got ZF autos, and all the manuals either got ZF or Getrag boxes.

BMW makes all of their engines. They are a renowned engine builder. The M44 in your car is a great engine, and I highly doubt it's on it's last legs if it's received proper care. What makes you think that? BTW, the rest of the car probably is on it's last legs if maintenance hasn't been kept up on. As a general rule, and aside from valve cover/timing cover gaskets, BMW engines will last forever.

Wow! I didn't think they made assholes like you anymore. Do yourself a favour and pick up a dictionary and look up "ignorant" for the real meaning of the word. And just as an FYI; a licensed BMW mechanic was the one who told me that.

Grow up!

Who is the asshole? Your referring to me? Then in that case I'm a licensed professional googler (est. in 1985, incase you were wondering if they still made them) who knows what a search button does. Obvious your trained bmw mechanic didn't take the "googlee" school that BMW Step program offers to look up such unknown data such as the maker of a bmw engine.
As for request of a definition (I searched that too)

ig·no·rant
Pronunciation: \***712;ig-n(***601;-)r***601;nt\
Function: adjective
Date: 14th century
1 a: destitute of knowledge or education <an ignorant society>; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified <parents ignorant of modern mathematics> b: resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence <ignorant errors>

With that definition it looks like you being the ignorant one with out any education or comprehension to run a simple check like search the google or what GWB calls the "GOOGLER" on who makes BMW engines. If you can afford the monthly payments or lease payments of any e9x, you surely should of been able to afford the upkeep and maintenance of a simple e36.

Either way as the other post have shown as with most bmw's they last forever with proper maintenance since BMW makes and engineers there cars. :)
