Not sure if this is right or not, so take it with a grain of salt. Make sure that the new cluster (M3) will work on your car (318i). I believe I read somewhere that if the clusters are coded differently (i.e. coded for a 6cyl vs a 4 cyl) some functions will not operate properly. I say this because I think that this is precisely why my cluster's temp gauge will not work.
Here's why I think this is right:
* fact: The cluster on my car was changed
1. The temp sender unit checks out OK
2. The wiring between the unit and the cluster is also good
3. I ran the cluster "self check" diagnostics and the gauge itself works.
4. I cant get a temp reading on my gauge inspite of all this.
My research led me to the possibility that the newly installed cluster is out of a 6cyl car and I have a 318is and thus, it is not properly coded to my car.
Hope this helps.
