I know there's a wheel/tire forum, but it's for an E90 and this forum gets a lot more traffic. I'm looking for a tire for auto-x and can't decide between Falken 615's, Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Spec, Kumho MX's or an R compound (probably Nitto's or Kumho's). I'm not that great yet, but my stock tires are gone and am looking to put whatever tires I get on the stock 16" wheels (probably 225's). Anybody got experience with these tires? Also, I run D-Stock and can't figure out if R's are even legal in there. It says no race tires, but I think anything DOT is technically not a "race tire". Race tire seems a bit arbitrary.
EDIT: These tires will see ZERO street use, since I'm getting a set of 18's for the street.
Thanks,
Trey

If you Auto X and drive in the D Stock class I am pretty sure you can use R compound. This would be your best choice. Check with your local SCCA club for tire use in D Class.

r- compounds might not be best for auto-x because there may not be enough time to heat them properly. Also they are expensive and you must not drive on them to/from the track. The Dunlop is designed more as an auto-x tire. I can tell you it grips VERY well!!

if you have a spare set of wheels...R-compounds. that way you can drive up on street tires and then switch them out for the event. if not, get the Dunlops you mentioned...they have been getting rave reviews.

I have the prior version of the Dunlops on my 335 and have been extremely impressed with them, both at DEs and on the street. Assuming R compound tires are not your option/choice for auto-x, I expect you would be very pleased with the Dunlops. Excellent grip wet and dry.

Thanks for the replies guys. Dunlops it is. I may switch to R compounds later if I feel the extra traction is worth that much more money. I wouldn't worry about not being able to heat some of those though, the Hoosier A6's are designed specifically for autocross. Either way, I think the Dunlops are probably the best bang for the buck .
