Well, just today, I drove the Works Cooper S. Oh boy, it was very sweet, very strong accelaration, great supercharger and exhaust sound. I was impressed with the shifter and how precise it was, it made changing gears easy, not a chore; and the clutch pick up seemed somewhere between just right to very slightly high.

The only thing I felt uncomfortable with was the overall suspension setup, which I understand is the same as the regular Cooper S. The car had some play in fast zig-zags, it took a fraction of a second for the car to settle, but it was noticeable.

Price? The particular one I drove was $31K :(

If you want suspension play, you should drive my car sometime. :D

$31k actually sounds like sticker. IIRC this is a 5 or 6k premium over a S, which with some options is already ~$25k.

I'm just trying to win a plain Cooper a local TV station is giving away this week...

yup, you're correct

I priced out one for myself (pretty low-optioned) and it only came to about $27,000 (which inludes $4500 for the kit + $1,000 for installation)

You mean your father's WRX? After thinking about it some I was wondering...are you sure that car has the front anti-roll bar installed?

I went to Sterling this morning for oil change, you know before the auto-x. I stopped at the Mini section to ask about the Works. The guy asked me if I wanted to drive it; huh!!???

So, I took this 61-mile odo chilli red one - by myself - on to their test drive route. Boy, it was sweet. Frankly, I checked everything in the car, but the engine compartment    , no kidding.

Any how, I do not know if the strut bar was there or not, but the suspension play I am referring to is not a strutbar-will-fix one. The car was not twisting or front and rears weren't "not communicating." It was the air gettig under car or going over a hill on the downward side while taking a turn; the suspension would take a little to settle and give you back the control to point the car the direction you really intent to. Definitely needs stiffer springs.

I did not sense much lean on the car in any of the turns, but its still hard to judge in the test road I went through; twisties, but not auto-x type.

Sounds like shocks, not springs, to me...

Yep, you are right of course. Specifically the rebound setting was too soft. I did not feel anything specific about the bound, but it also felt as if the springs could use a higher rate.
