View Full Version : ZHP weighted short shift knob question

My Z4MC finished production last Friday, so I thought I start buying some cost effective mods.

I Bought a ZHP short shift knob from Tischer BMW, since it's highly regarded as one of the best upgrades. Now, my question is...will I get the short knob with a silver ring? or the longer knob (same length as the stock knob, but weighted)

thx

-Get nothing until you drive the car for a while. Learn the car before you mod.

I suggest the CDV delete as the first mod. Do a search and see the difference it made for shifting.

thxShort knob with silver ring if it is the ZHP - shorter than OE.

Anyone know what the shaft of the shifter looks like? I'm trying to figure out if this one will fit as I prefer it. http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=MorePartInfo&PartID=489019&siteid=214672&catalogid=4462

I'm 90% sure it will as the normal ZHP knob fits the 335.

I assume to remove it you just pull up and smack yourself in the face like the 335.

No doubt that the ZHP is a very nice addition but I have to tell you it don't get any better IMO than the Whalen Shift Machine

This picture doesn't do it justice but it's all I have at the moment. Everyone that has seen mine in the Coupe has commented that they thought the car had a short shift kit....

All the manual shift knobs fit all the manual models in BMWs.

If you want one of those shift knobs (without the boot-the one you linked to is the shift knob and the shift boot), I have one from my 135 that I will sell you, for a lot less than $123.00

thanks for all the comments so far.

I did check out the whalen knob that Mike prefers..but with So. Cal sun..it'll cook the knob..and my man-paw!

I forgot the exact URL, but there's a shift knob thread at e90post.com filled with detailed info and lots of pics.

Called the 1-800 number again today, car is still waiting to be released to the carrier (get on with it BMW!). I figure I'll drive the car for a while before I do anything, first mod will be the RPI skid plates that I received last week.

can't wait~

The waiting at the end of the process is the worse...

Get yourself a short (Stubby) Antennae... Easy/huge improvement over the long one. I did that on the floor of the performance center when I picked mine up...

Good Luck!!

If you're going to install an aftermarket armrest...go with the taller knob. If you're not planning on an armrest, the shorter knob is the way to go.

I like this knob, my only question is how hot to the touch it gets in the summer.

They do get downright toasty.
But that hasn't stopped hundreds of people in SoCal, TX, FL, (and even a few in Phoenix!)
from driving with them.

You and me both. I have been waiting for release to carrier for 7 days now. What are the last 7 digits of your VIN?

I have the weighted M shift knob, it makes shifting MUCH more exact. With the stock light weight plastic knob I felt the shifting was insecure and not very confidence inspiring. So, my opinion is ditch the stock shifter asap.

Secondly, the antenna. I just unscrewed mine and took on the black plastic cap. Then I cut it down and glue back on the black cap. Looks great and it didnt cost anything.

I suggest the CDV delete as the first mod. Do a search and see the difference it made for shifting.

I second that motion, unbelievable difference.

Mike,

I'll get a stubby antenna (probably a 4 inch) before I go pick up my car..and I'll install it on the spot like you did, ha~

I just don't know where to buy from, are all stubbies created equal? Folks on this board have bought from bimmian.com, eBay, S2000 antennas from Honda...just a little puzzled here.

As to the armrest deal, I just found that product on leatherz...don't know if I'll install one. I'll have to drive the car around for a bit before I make that decision. Never really owned a car without center armrest though.

JonP, My production number is 6764239, did you get a M as well?

CDV will definitely be on the list of mods, but first I want to experience this infamous measure installed by BMW before I do anything

It's been 7 days..where's my cah?

Yes, I am an M. I am 6752948, last 7 of my VIN are LM087082. Curious how close your VIN is to mine.

Erm, if an E46 guy is allowed to ask: How much do these weighted ZHP shift knobs weigh?

My stock knob is exactly 80 grams, on Mrs. Wingspan's fancy-pants French Tefal cooking scale. :)

:dunno:

I got mine from bimmian.com and was happy with the service and speed in which they shipped it. There was a posting though earlier that mentioned something about cutting the OEM down to size which I had not thought of. There is a little degradation of reception with the 4 inch mast form bimmian but that hasn't really bothered me because I tend to listen to my iPod more than the radio...

-Get nothing until you drive the car for a while. Learn the car before you mod.

I agree but I would say "get to know" the car, rather than learn. You know..... as a whole. Maybe that's what Pal meant, not just learn to drive it as is. You might find that you like the cool little lite up gear knob enough to keep it! Or if not, then you have something to look forward to after you have partly exhausted the sheer joy of owning a new car.

I put the ZHP knob on at about 10,000kms (about 2,000 kms ago). I like it better, but not better enough to be sorry I waited. (or didn't get around to it for awhile rather).

I bought the stubby antenna a while ago but haven't gotten around to putting it on yet. The stock one doesn't phase me.

The CDV I haven't done but it's booked for. The only reason I've waited over 1.5 years for that is that I'm lazy.... Should have done it ages ago.

One thing though Leonardo..... if my car had been same as your spec, I would have coloured out those reflectors ASAP!!! They make me

Anyway, you're excited about your car. Cool! The waiting is unbearable. Not long now! Channel it into forums and youtube.

And I know what you're thinking about valve caps..... make sure you don't oreder ones that drop rust onto your wheels. ;)
