Very good performance that's obscured that's obscured by being a status symbol.

World class performance wasted on a daily commute with build quality not up to the challenge of city streets.
To me, BMW means Bavarian Motor Works.

Hello, Edb5020. I'm sorry to bust chops, but... but I have to, a little.
What does BMW mean to you?
It means Bayerische Motoren Werke to me.
It also embodies a particular culture of thought on how to make motorized land vehicles. From chassis to drivetrain to switchgear, I have never driven any car that is quite like a BMW, nor ridden any motorcycle like a BMW, at least among modern vehicles.
The designers at BMW subscribe to a stubbornness that seems to be central to this culture: there is the BMW way to do things, convention be damned. The company's seeming concessions to market expectations aside, this longstanding trait of the company has been cited by many fans of its work.
What do you think and/or feel about BMW's? :)
About BMW's what? :D

BMW is a company that is obsessed with driving performance, and we are its devotees.
The American trajedy is that the US has never had a hi-tech automobile company.
The only other car maker that produces such driving machines is Porsche.

To me it means a company committed to building cars that are designed to drive well for the enthusiast owner. Suspension, chassis, engine and interior layouts are designed to meet these goals. The competition lags behind in one or all of these criteria. Some may have friendlier interiors but none have better handling or all around engine performance.
The drawback, if you look at it this way is you pay for this high standard and they cost more than the competition.
Thanks, Mike.

That means you suddenly expand when you set foot into your 5 series. Or depending on your prespective in life, you suddenly suffer from srinkage the second you find yourself behind the wheel of your benz.
Glass half full or half empty, that is the question
:flush: <~~~~ behind the wheel of your benz
:jawdrop: <~~~ BMW Drivers.
I sold a CLK 430 and bought a 335 in hopes that my penis would expand.
The end result was that my bank account shrunk drastically and my penis remained 2".

CLK are soooo overpriced!!! ; it doesn't make me sleep well at night just knowing how slow the engine is, nothing fancy about the interior but with a
53k range of a price tag to go with it. wtf?
Have you taken this up with your service advisor?
Yes, I called my Service Advisor, but he said CRANKSHAFTS are not covered by the BMW warranty.

That is an easy one. It means that you are more intelligent and more attractive when you drive the BMW!!

BMW to me means "I'll run fine while I'm under warranty, but after that you're on your own.
My family has owned 7 BMW's in the past o 2 years and they've all started to break down one way or another after about 4 years.

If all I owned was the BMW, you wouldn't say my glass wasn't full would you. I've owned the Mercedes for 32 years and it at the very least deserves a half glass.

+1 On that. I love the performance, but I'm not impressed with all the quirks. So far nothing to really gripe about, but the quality feels shaky.
Of course, I started out looking for a sports car and fell in love with a GT. I guess I got what I asked for.

This is gonna sound goofy but I feel a little safer in a BMW than other cars. A friend of mine walked away from a nasty wreck (wasn't wearing a seatbelt either) and one of the emergency responder's said the car saved his life.
However, the one I have now will be my last unless I lease one. The cost of parts and fixing anything is more silly than I ever could have imagined - and I take care of the car. I've owned some other makes deemed unreliable and "trouble" in the past, but nothing compares to what I've been sinking into this one.

One of the better handling and driving cars out there for the cost that you must pay to gain entry. If you need a car - don't get a bmw, get a car here in AZ can be had as low as $1,200 bucks used. But if you want to enjoy your drive somewhat- a bmw will make it that much more enjoyable thus giving you something that many individuals are missing (fun).

A co-worker who just returned from Iran explained the affection they have for BMWs in particular over many other luxury brands so I understand why your family is fascinated by them.

Want it or not, BMW is also part of a lifestyle.
I like BMWs. However, I see them as being overly complicated at times and based on one frame of mind.
For example, sticking with rear wheel drive is nice in theory but FWD is more practical for many parts of the world where it snows.
Other examples of not listening to practicality is the getting rid of side moldings and, in the new 3 series in the US, having red rear turn signals, not amber/yellow ones.
The car could make slight improvements for the do it yourselfer. To start out, the lowly oil change could be made easier. Having personal and hands on involvement with your car is better than being a rich and wasteful person who tells the service department, do anything you want at any price.
Still, the driving emphasis of BMWs are a strong point. Even though BMW thinks of itself as better and not comparable to Audi, Saab, and Acura, it needs to looks at those cars once in a while as well as the most reliable car on the market, whatever that may be. For some models, it could look to Maserati and think of how that could make the car without regard to the price and complexity. However, even on the top end, bean counters do have influence otherwise a car could easily cost $400,000 if they are not careful with the cost of parts, marketing, and labor costs/management perks.

For example, sticking with rear wheel drive is nice in theory but FWD is more practical for many parts of the world where it snows.
All you need is X amount of weight and pressure per inch on X amount of contact patch and you can have snow traction with either front or rear drive. Rear drive cars with staggered wheels usually get smaller wheels and tires in the back during winter. i.e. an extra set of front wheels on the rear.
The difference between understeer (front drive) and oversteer (rear drive) is the end of the car that you hit the obstacle with.
Would you like to slide helplessly straight into the tree with NO chance of steering control, or would you like to go into a drift with at least the POSSIBILITY of recovery?
