I am confused....just a few week BMW won the most "green" auto manufacture.

"Over 200 of the most popular 2008- and 2009-model vehicles and over 60 children's car seats were tested for chemicals that off-gas from parts such as the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests, seats, and carpet. These chemicals become part of the air we breathe, contributing to "new car smell" and a variety of acute and long-term health concerns. Since the average American spends more than 1.5 hours in a car every day, toxic chemical exposure inside vehicles is a major source of potential indoor air pollution. Children are the most vulnerable population since their systems are still developing."

The 128i Convertable came in 3rd and there are other verts on the list, wonder if all the chemical out-gasing is coming from the mechanism to open/close the roof or the UV protection on the seats.

the "green" study relates to environmental responsibility during the manufacture process, i.e. use of responsible energy sources, low toxicity paint, etc.

It has nothing to do with safety of interiors, and this is not a new issue for BMW, their interiors have often tested high for release of toxic chemicals

all those plastics etc emit chemicals...

The 128i Cabrio was the only 1er tested, so you can assume that the other 1er models are in the same boat.

Probably quite a meaningless study over all, as the rate of outgassing changes massively over time, probably more an indication that the worst rated cars are the ones that were closer to their manufacture date on average than the best rated cars. GM likely improved 27% from the year before due to the fact it's vehicles are sitting at the dealer longer before they managed to test them (quite likely a low number of samples for any given car too, if not a sample of 1).
