I have a bmw 316i it is a 1991 E36 model with M40 engine

first question is this a afm or a maf engine as i read their is a difference.

the main reason for confusion is this,

the car has developed a problem in 2 places,
1) on idle it will be fine, then all of a sudden it will try to stall and sit under 500 rpm, if i push the throttle a small ammount it wont change, if push throttle all the way it will be fine for a short period.
2) on accelerating under 3500 rpm it is really touch and go for power, some time fine other times their is now power and will try to stall. if i take it above 3500 rpm tho it is perfectly fine at all times.

this has been in 3 different garages and been on a computor, no one seems to know what is going on at all

it has been checked for air leaks and also fuel supply and has a new dizzy and arm, sparks and filter

has any one got any ideas what is going on from the symptoms
cheers karl

Ok had the car read today finnaly found a garage that can read the car (4 i tried could'nt) it came out with multiple faults but 1 could have been caused due to unplugging a sensor

falts were

41 Airflow sensor signal (althought this was un pluged wilst running by 2 garages and ran like crap when it was unpluged )
201 o2 sensor control
70 02 sensor circuit
73 v speed sensor

the guy said 41 could have been when it was unpluged and that was the only thing that was unpluged when running

also the o2 sensor would cause the v speed sensor to malfunction (not too sure if this is correct)

what do you guys think ?
