2001 320i Auto Tranny

Hey all,

I have a buddy who's auto tranny in his 320i just blew up. He was pulling into a parking lot and heard a loud bang/thud. He thought he had hit someting. Looked around nothing. Upon starting car back up, he could not pull away. Dealer told him tranny blew up.

Is this common on 2001 3 series auto trannies?
