I found a catalog for the '09 E60 on the international BMW site (www.bmw.com, not www.bmwusa.com). I know that nothing is official for the US until it says "BMW NA" on it, but we can at least make some generalizations.
see http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/5series/sedan/2007/introduction.html
It's Interesting to note the new iDrive controller and screen shots of the new Nav, plus the absence of the second navigation drive in the dash.
The NA BMW website still has the '08 version of this catalog.
Any dealers out there have any further info they can pass along regarding the '09's? Pricing??
Thanks as always.

Price's are not out yet. Nav now comes w/ 80g memory. No need for separate disc feed for Nav. 12g dedicated to music.

when they say 'hard drive' they really mean 'flash memory' right? not the kind of hard drive in a laptop which fails after a couple years?

Flash memory would be great -- otherwise I can just see the next generation of forum topics:
"Hard drive crashed today.....lost everything"
"Anyone tried aftermarket HD in E60?"
"DIY: Gen 1 80gB HD update to 1TB media server"
??

No way it's flash, it will be a standard HDD with moving parts, that yes, will ultimately fail eventually.
I don't think there is such a thing as a flash drive with 80 GBs on the market. I'm pretty sure the biggest flash drive Apple makes is 16 GBs.

It is a hard disk based system and initially the only cars in the US to get the system will be the 1 & 3. The other models utilizing iDrive will receive the update during the model year (read Spring). So the 2009 5 series will not get the new system from the start. All ///M models with iDrive will receive the new system from the start of MY 09.
As far as hard disks crashing: the newer drives that are designed for this type of use are very stable and designed to handle the rigors, most newer laptop have hard disks that last and are designed to take abuse. My Power Books are still on the original HDs and they are now 4 and 5 years old, traveling and getting abused. The system in the BMW has been overly designed and developed.

32 GB Flash drives are readily available and affordable while 1.6 TB (which cost more than most BMWs) are also available.
