I was recently in Europe and rented 2 cars... a VW Passat 1.9 TDI wagon and a Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI wagon. Both on the Nurburgring and on the freeways I really missed my 335i's.

However I must say that going close to 600 miles on a tank of gas, getting 40 mpg (with 5 people and 3 weeks worth of luggage) while averaging 75 mph does have its appeal.

Which leads me back to the 335d...I know this has been debated ad nauseum but I am really a big fan of diesel powered cars now that I have spent time in some. We Americans have a bad impression of diesel based on old Rabbits and commercial vehicles. I think diesel is the future and I am excited to test drive a 335d.

Now (BMW if you are listening)...a 335xd touring would be great!

Last time in Germany, I rented an Opel diesel station wagon myself because the rental company wouldn't let me take a BMW into Poland. After a week with that car, I told my wife I would definitely buy a diesel if they offered it in the states. I drove a bit faster than you (more like 105 - 110 mph) and "only" got 35 mpg.

I'd also jump on a 335xD touring in a flash.

Car theft in former eastern block countries is extremely high. Many rental companies do not allow their cars into former communist countries. My Hertz Skoda rent-a-car had a sticker warning me not to take the car into prohibited countries.

The rental manager said that they don't allow it because the car thieves target the mercedes, BMW, and other really nice cars. I guess they don't bother the Opels much. The BMW rental papers would have been stamped that the owner (rental car company) had not given permission to take the car into Poland.
That Opel diesel ran pretty well, though.
