New X3 - getting occassional brake squeak - if I assume it's not the pads, what else could it be ? moisture, brake dust, thin layer of rust ( it's been raining alot lately ).

Or can anyone think of something else ?

funny, there WAS a time when if your BMW's brakes DIDN'T squeak you assumed something was wrong with tme.

not sure what it could be though... drive through any loose gravel lately?

Shows up occassionally for me after getting my first set of new pads/rotors... usually goes away after a while. If really annoying - try a few very stiff stops from speed.

... when my X3 was rather new and had very low miles the brakes made some very funny noises one morning on the way to work. "OH NO!" I thought. But then it went away after a few more days of normal driving.

I would think it's just your brakes "wearing in" or seating and the problem shouldn't persist. As long as they seem to be working OK I'd wait a while and see if it stops. Another thing I've heard, you could try is to back up fairly quickly and apply the brakes firmly, but not too hard, to help them get seated.
