View Full Version : Will the wagon ever get the dual clutch?

Will they ever put the 7 speed dual clutch transmission in the wagon for the US market? If so, when?

Gotta love the hate. Wow.

Wagons are a great alternative to an SUV. They are still fun to drive. They can haul stuff, dogs, and kids as well as an SUV (interior volumes pretty much the same). And they don't burn the amount a gas does because they aren't a million pounds.

Your view is pretty american centric and one of the reasons why the US doesn't get some of the coolest cars in the world.

Oh, I just read some of your previous posts - I wish I didn't waste my time typing the above.

My wife totaled her 06 XC70 back in April. She didn't like the new Volvo and decided to buy an 08 328 wagon. She needs the ability to cary things for her job and her car allowance pays for the car. She has had a Trooper, 2 Expeditions, a Mountaineer, and the Volvo wagon. She likes the 328 more than she liked any other car. She loves the way it drives. She knows nothing about the mechanical makeup or cares about the history of the brand. The wagon serves her purpose well. She is still washing and vacumeing it every weekend after 4 months. GH

+1 for 3-series wagons. Indeed, why do people hate so much? I plan to replace my E46 coupe with a 328xiT next time around. I need the space of a hatchback / wagon for throwing skis, bikes, and boards in the back, but still want the 3-series driving experience.

ChefDrew335i, i applaud you for "keeping it real" with your bimmer 335i. It is a pure driver's car, as BMW meant it - er, wait a minute, no it's not. The car is entirely too heavy: why did you sell out and get the overly luxurious 335, when you could have gotten a stripped E30 M3 for a lot less dough? Now THAT's a real BMW: 2800 lbs. of high-strung, bavarian ass-kickery, and no fancy gadgets.
One might say every 3-series since then has been a compromise of sorts.

BL

Yeah, yeah same old song and dance. Wagons are so boring compared to your hot coupe.

Humbug.

Brock ***8211; yes the tailgate window opens independently. I only use the lift gate about ½ of the time. It***8217;s a nice touch.

Its also nice to know that BMW (unlike Mercedes or Audi) did not compromise the driving dynamics for the wagon. You even get a better weight balance with the wagon (49F/51R ***8211; I like it).

whenever i see someone who can't spell, i feel bad for them. When i see someone who doesn't appreciate the versatility of the wagon, i don't really care.

I don't have much interest in the dual clutch transmission, but would love to see the n54 engine offered in the us in the sport wagon.

No one ever suspects the wagoneer!

Agree! I had a Volvo V70R for awhile and it was a lot of fun. When the Audi RS4 came out I went looking for the wagon but it is not available in the US, and importing is a pain in the ....

I wouldn't want the all wheel drive 5 series they have here but would take one of these.

In Europe, the E91 (aka "wagon" or touring) continues to be one of the biggest selling models.
In the USA, it only has a 5% market share.

Boy, those Europeans sure must be ugly! They buy diesels too! And put dumb stuff like bicycles, windsurfers, kayaks, and lots of Norwegian blonds in their wagons!

Oh yeah, forgot about the OP's Q: The E91 335i will get the DCT in Euro. But not much chance here for at least a couple years.

Must be why my 14 year old wants one.

In euro the average age of E91 owners is younger than sedans, coupes, or verts.

Give it up. Resistance is futile.

Just came in from the garage after mounting up a pair of Yakima Lowriders and a pair of bike racks on my e91. Do any of you fellow wagon lovers have a rocket box on your roof? It looks like the box isn't going to clear the shark's fin and w/o the Russian brunette's help I'm not going to test the fit until tomorrow night. Any advice on box fit would be appreciated.

This weekend's roadtrip: three people, a dog, bikes and fishing gear off to Idaho in the 328iT.

Ahhh, gotta love the wagon.

In Germany, they sell more 3 wagons than the sedan (or coupe or convert). I think 44% of the 3 series are wagons.

I was wondering the same thing. He seems to have disappeared from Bimmerfest.

In any case, he had commented that only old people like wagons. I said that I'm 33 and am seriously considering a 3er wagon. WRT to the OP, I'll add that I'm more interested in a manual diesel version, but I wouldn't mind the option of the new 7-speed transmission in case the wife would prefer that.

Thank you. At our age we can't take too much stimulation. :tsk:

Good to see mummy and daddy have reinstated your Internet privileges (damn you Al Gore).

Yeah, I don't know from where ChefDrew335i is getting all of his ageist vitriol – my gut tells me he is an old fart in denial. Perhaps he just watched Logan’s Run for the first time? So sad. FWIW, I’m 29 and single. Here’s a link to that great article by Dan Neil of the LA times, espousing it as the ultimate ride for single people.

So far I have had 15 BMW's, three of them wagons, an E39, E61 and now the E91, all three were manuals.

The E91 handles as well as the sedan and, in my opinion, better than my E61 Msport did.

I have room for golf clubs when I get away for a round or if I need to pick up a big box at Costco or Home Depot. I remember trying to get a new lawnmower in my E39 sedan, what a gong show.

If we could get a 335 touring in NA it would be the ideal car. For now, I'm loving my 328xit.

I've never not had a wagon in my household, they are amazing considering you can toss all your crap in them, and still get 20mpg around town. Its not uncommon that we have the SUV at a store like Circuit City, and we end up returning with the wagon to haul our purchases home.

a 330xd touring, err, 330dt xDrive would make this household a 3 BMW household ;)

I'm borrowing my wifey's 328xiT... I have the rear seats folded down and the cargo net divider thing up. It's like a really well handling low sitting truck. The extra weight of the hatch makes it squat when you gas it and it's got terrific pick up. Now I want one for myself. I think I'll do an MT ED and wait for the DCT to replace the wifey's...

My wife's car is an 01 e39 touring with 134000 miles. It is still solid, a great driver and so useful. We love it. When I finally get around to replacing it I will probably get an e90 335. But, if an e91 335 comes out before then that is what I'll get.

I should have answered my own question. BMW NA will never bring a 335 version of the e91. They prob won't bring a diesel either.

I think the dct is only going to make its way into cars with the 335 engine so therefore noe dct.

I am actually afraid that bmw will drop its 6 spd from the line up since audi just made that decision with the new a4.

+1 on feeling the love. And this is probably too late, but I have the Lowriders on my 325xiT. You will have no issues with the rocket-box or any other roof top box as their is at least an inch of clearence between the top of the dorsal fin and the top of the cross-bars. (The only exception would be the older Thule expedition boxes which, to improve aerodynamics, sat lower then the cross-bars.)

On a similar note: since I leave my rack on year-round to carry bicycles, I wanted something to make the rack quieter. Normally I would have picked-up a fairing, but with the extra-large sunroof, they just don't work. Yakima makes a really cool deflector called the "windjammer" it makes the rack much quieter without touching the roof! This is a great product.

Hey Z3Mcoupedriver, I'm seriously considering a 328xiT for my next car, but also seriously considering a Clubman S (and possibly an A3 2.0Tq when it arrives). I would be really interested to get your feedback on those two cars. Obviously the mini is smaller, but how does it rate for driving enjoyment, usable space, and overall experience when compared to your BMW?

Thanks,

Brock

Thanks Nate,

Just back from the trip, 28mpg and lots of fun in the twisties outside of Jackson.

Sadly our box is one of the Thule Expeditions. It is the only size that would fit through the garage door on top of our Highlander. I may have to put a new box on the wishlist.

I've had a windjammer on my Subi for years, makes a big difference.

This just may be the ultimate roadtrip mobile, in the past 12 days it has been in CA, NV, AZ, UT, ID, MT and WY. Where to next?

Today's job; remove dog hair, dirt-road dust and a rather impressive collection of bugs from my wagon.

I'm really hoping that's the case, it'd be nice to have the option across the board. I don't expect them to place it on anything but the "35" level, but I could totally see this in the sedan model, as well.

You should try to track down a pair of the Yakima "double-cross" towers. The low-rider replaced the double-cross about five years ago. The Low-riders sit about an inch and a quarter lower than the double-cross. That should take care of the height issue...
