Just saw a flash across the screen on CNBC about a recall on account of passenger airbag problems. Can't find anything on the web.

Anybody have any information on this?

Thanks.

yes:
WASHINGTON - BMW AG is recalling 200,000 vehicles over concerns that the front passenger air bag may not deploy in a crash. The German automaker says the recall involves the 2006 3 Series, the 2004-2006 5 Series, and the 2004-2006 X3 compact sport utility vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site Wednesday that small cracks could develop in a seat detection mat and lead to the front passenger air bags to be deactivated.

I just hope there will be new seats. I have the famous wear marks from getting in and out and this would take of that....Or a new 335.....:p

The first one is BMW's answer to the highway safety and the second one is the initial complant.

Make / Models :

BMW / 3 SERIES 2006

BMW / 5 SERIES 2004-2006

BMW / X3 2004-2006

Recall Number:

08V384000

Summary:

BMW IS RECALLING 200,000 MY 2006 3 SERIES SPORT SEAT, MY 2004-2006 5 SERIES STANDARD AND SPORT SEAT, AND MY 2004-2006 X3 PASSENGER VEHICLES. DEPENDING ON THE MANNER AND FREQUENCY OF THE FRONT PASSENGER'S ENTRY AND EXIT, SMALL CRACKS HAVE DEVELOPED IN THE MAT. IF THIS OCCURS, THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE HEAD PROTECTION SYSTEM, WILL BE DEACTIVATED AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP AS WELL AS THE PASSENGER AIR BAG "ON-OFF" LAMP WILL BE ILLUMINATED.

Consequence:

IN THIS SITUATION THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY EVEN IF A SUFFICIENTLY SEVERE ACCIDENT WOULD OCCUR AND OCCUPANT PROTECTION PROVIDED BY THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE.

Remedy:

DEALERS WILL REWORK THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR MAT SO THAT EXTERNAL FORCE APPLICATION TO THE SEAT DOES NOT CAUSE A CRACK TO THE MAT. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING LATE SEPTEMBER 2008. BMW WILL ALSO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THESE VEHICLES TO 10 YEARS FROM FIRST REGISTRATION WITHOUT ANY MILEAGE LIMIT. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

Notes:

BMW IS EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 10 YEARS FROM FIRST REGISTRATION WITHOUT ANY MILEAGE LIMIT TO THE FOLLOWING VEHICLES: MY 2006 6-SERIES, 3-SERIES (STANDARD SEAT), MY 2004-2005 Z4, MY 2004-2006 7-SERIES, MY 2006 X5, AND MY 2004-2006 5-SERIES (COMFORT SEAT). UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM, THE OCCUPANT DETECTION MAT IN A VEHICLE THAT EXPERIENCES THIS SPECIFIC ISSUE WILL BE REPLACED AT NO CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO [url]HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV (http://nhthqnwws111.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/docservlet/Artemis/Public/Recalls/2008/V/RCAK-08V384-2899.pdf)

Just called the BMW 800 number - they are taking names and numbers for follow-up with a BMW representatives; the operators have no information about the recall.

So, does the Premium seat count as standard seat in the 3s? If it doesn't then why, cuz I highly doubt they'll use different type of mats in the premium seats.

Any seats besides the ones offered with the sport package in the 3 series are considered the standard seats. (In the U.S.)

Interesting. I ran into this problem about a year ago, where my passenger airbag warning light would come on intermittently. When this happened, the seat belt warning came on as well, even though both driver and passenger were buckled in. 2006 325i with the sport and luxury packages on (power front seats).

After a couple of recurrences of this problem, I took it into the dealer, and they ran the checks and replaced that mat. Things have been fine since. I recall that the service rep told me she'd had the same problem with her 06 325i.

Anyway, hope I get the recall - could definitely use the warranty extension :) Do we know if it's the complete warranty that's extended, or just anything related to seat / mat / airbag?

It's a warranty extension on the passenger seat occupancy sensor mat.

Hmmm...I have a 2008 and my passenger air bag light/warning is coming on intermittently as well. My SA tells me that the fault is a sensor and unit inside the overhead console, and they are fixing it next week once all the parts are in. Anyone else who isn't part of the recall experiencing this problem?
