I been reading up on these boards for the past few months now, since I've been wanting to buy the new 1 series. But no matter how much I read up on, the whole "buying a new car" process can be some what overwhelming. Especially since this is my first new car. I'm hoping that you guys will be able to give me peace of mind.

So here's the deal that I've come across recently. I know that the model year is coming to a close for the '08s and I've been told that if I wanted to order a 128, it would have to be an '09 (pricing not out yet, possible price increase?). But one of the dealers I spoke with mentioned to me that there was a "modifiable production slot" still available so that I can get the options I wanted. So the plan is to get a 128 coupe with the following options:

Alpine White ($0)
6 speed manual transmission ($0)
Sports Package ($1,300)
High Gloss Black Trim ($0)
Coral Red Leather Seats ($1,450)
Heated Front Seats ($500)

Not exactly decked out, but those were the only options I really wanted. So according to Edmunds, the MSRP is $32,675 (base model $28,600 + options above + $825 destination fee). Invoice price is listed at $30,095. The deal that we agreed on was $31,000 + tax/title/registation/fees. $905 over invoice for a custom ordered 128 coupe. An added bonus, he said that he would throw in floor mats as part of the deal. :-P

I feel that I'm getting a good deal here, but the tax/title/registation/fees portion worries me a bit since I don't know how much I should be paying. I'm assuming that tax refers to sales tax (6% here in CT), but I don't know how much the title/registration will be, nor do I know what fees the dealer will charge me. And I've read about the MACO and Training fees, with the MACO ranging from $300-$500 depending on location and the Training fee being $185. But what other fees can they possible charge me with?

Sorry for the lengthy post, but there was a lot going through my mind and I wanted to get it all out there. Especially since this will be my first major purchase.

That is a good deal. Did you compare what you found on Edmunds with what is here on bimmerfest (taking into account the price increase that is not reflected in the price list on bimmerfest) ? http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251587

Tell the dealer to give you a complete breakdown of exactly what the tax/title/registration/fees will be. The agreed upon $31k should include the MACO and training fees. The only additional "fee" you should have to pay would be some kind of dealer processing/documentation fee and it should not exceed $100, although I'm seeing more and more dealers charging (or trying to) $200 - $300. Tax, title fee and registration should be very straight forward. If you go to your state dmv's website you should be able to find out the title fee and registration cost quite easily.

Good luck.

Thanks for the response tturedraider! I did as you suggested, asking for the complete breakdown and it turned out exactly as you said. Tax was $1,875.60 (CT sales tax 6%). Registration was $163 (on the CT DMV site it added up to $150, I'll pay the extra $13 instead of waiting in line). And the "dealer fee" was $260. I'm going to ask for a "breakdown" on this "dealer fee" to see if he can justify the $260. Other than that, everything seems to be in good shape. Thanks again for the help.

Glad to hear it. Just for comparison the dealer documentation fee here in Texas is $50. It is a fee dealers are allowed to charge to cover the expense of them handling all the title and registration paperwork.

The $260 breakdown will be as follows : Owner's 401k $260.
Look, it's OK, just go ahead and be happy.

You sure that isn't for the owner's boat payment?

I agree.. the $260 is added profit... but, if it makes you feel any better, a fee of $200-$300 is typical for Connecticut.. I believe the local custom is to call it a "conveyance" fee..

Seems like a good deal on a custom-ordered 1-series... even with the fee..
