According to the manual, the R/T button on the steering wheel of the e46 is supposed to toggle between the various audio sources -- phone, radio, cd, cd changer -- like the MODE button on the head unit. My car does not have the built-in phone. I can press that button all day and nothing happens. Is there a problem or is this button only active if you have a factory phone?

I emailed this query to BMW thru owner's circle and they just told me to ask the service advisor.

Thanks.

If you don't have the phone, the button does nothing.

If you don't have a phone, then it doesn't do anything. I suppose it is possible to have voice input without a phone, though.

that the button was inoperable when one does not have the factory phone, but the manual is a bit misleading on this point. Too bad it doesn't work like the MODE button -- then one wouldn't have to touch the head unit at all.

Hear me, BMW engineers?

Voice command module -- control the navigation system and take notes. Works with the phone too, if you have it. :)
