View Full Version : Concord BMW--bait and switch...

First post. Appologize if this is the wrong section but I wanted to relay a horrible experience I just had with Concord BMW last night.

I have been working with a CA for the past three weeks on prices and availability for a base 328i auto black on beige with 10k miles for 36 months.

I have read this forum many times to make sure i was working the proper deal and thought i had one.

This is what i worked out with the CA
MSRP: 34,850
purchase: 31,000 (taking into account auto credit)
MF: .00165 (gave them something--thought i would get this lower before signing the deal)
Residual 59% (lower my payments a bit)

monthly cost: $379 + tax and driveoffs. 0 net cap reduction.

It was so clear in every correspondence that this was where i needed to be, and they could work in their profit however they wanted as long as it was near this monthly payment and purchase price.
I finally went in to put a deposit down and met for the first time with the finance manager (probably mistake number 1). I went in 3 other times and asked to meet with him so i could take the final numberesl home but they refused until i was ready to put a deposit down. Red flags should have went off.
We went into the finance office and all of a sudden my monthly price jumped to $490!! They wouldn't budge lower than around 33,000 for the purchase price or the MF at .00165.
I was furious (at them and myself) for being led on for 3 weeks. Bait and Switch. The CA just sat there and said he thought they could do it. He actually had the gall as i was getting ready to leave to ask "so do we still have a deal?". Not at over $100 more a month we don't!!!

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this before but i was really just dumbfounded. I just sold my car and now need to find a deal in the next few days. I have calls into weatherford and san fran and they have already corresponded to me they can beat this deal. Concord was just more local.

Where did i go wrong?
Thanks for letting me vent

Sounds like you did all that you could do. You just happened to deal with someone who had no integrity. Not much you can do about that.

This time around you may want to do some research on the reputable dealers/CAs to work with in the bay area. A quick search and perhaps a couple of PMs to some 'festers is all it would take.

So here is another story that someone wanted everything that the net has to offer but also wanted to have the convinnience of "next door".

As we have all learned, you can't have your cake and eat it.

I wanted the nice 50 inch Flat Screen HD TV, and I wanted the nice cantiliver brackets for the TV. And I know I can get it for $180 via Internet, but I wanted the convinience of next door Circuit City and I wanted NOW!! But the price is $600 via Circuit City so what can I do?? Yeah... I waity an extra 5 days for UPS but that is just the way things goes...

I disagree--your analogy would only hold true if Circuit City told me I could have it at the better internet price but then when I went to pick it up they changed their mind and raised the price. To work, I would have had to know at the beginning or through the process of the higher price...which was not the case here.

You are missing my point.... and my point is this:

There are MANY delaers that will be glad to do the deal you want on the net, including many of the site sponsors. But you wanted the convinience of buying it next door, and they know that!

That is what I mean by you can't have your cake and eat it ...

We have the exact same issue w/ a Pacific BMW Parts dept. They are well know for cheap parts deals thru their "internet Sales program". But if you live within 50 miles radius of them you will have to pay for the "regular price" and no!! you cannot come by their parts dept and get the internet price. YOu can only get the "deal" if you buy it and have it shipped outside of their 50 miles radius.

Yes it sounds stupid, but they really are smart about this...

My suggestion:
Buy it from someone like Phellippk in Los Angeles CA or Jim in Salem OR. Yes it not next door, but they will get you the deal you want, no BS and a SlamDunk deal. Buy a one way fare via Southwest air for say $99 and drive your car home.

Done!! no hustle! no bustle!

Okay--if that is the point you were making i agree (and the Pacific example is just nuts). Here though, Concord advertises no internet specials. This was all done face to face and thruogh email directly with the CA.
Regardless, I take fault with not requiring to meet with the finance guy immediately to confirm the deal i had worked out in person with the CA. Maybe its even hit or miss because i have read decent reviews and good deals about Concord BMW here. Lesson learned. 3 weeks wasted.

No, it sounds like you got low balled into the store at $31k. This isn't bait and switch. You didn't go there for one car and get switched. You got low balled into the store and then high balled in the finance office.

Didn't you run the numbers using a lease calculator before going in? I mean, if you paid acq fee upfront, I'm getting $375 + tax using the values you provided and at a sale value of $33,000 with $825 acq fee rolled into cap, I'm getting $458 + tax or $490 inc. 7% sales tax.

Sounds more like your CA did the low ball technique to get you in the door and figured he'd put the onus on the F & I person to close the deal for him. And they took you off the market for three weeks since you probably pinged every center in the bay area on this price and told no way all around.

Heck, he probably even put his sales manager together and told him he was at $33k when you were both at $31k.

Nevertheless, walk away and move on. You still have two weeks to go to get a deal.

+1

my e90 lease is up end of this year. I was contacted by my dealership (Cunningham BMW) regarding purchasing of a new vehicle next year. I decided to do ED this time and after reviewing bimmerfest posts contacted Philippe K (Orange County is not that convenient for San Diego, but not bad either) to see what his best offer was. He responded immediately, with a very good offer and answered a whole bunch of questions I had about ED. I decided out of loyalty sake to give Cunningham BMW a chance to keep me as a customer and after some to-ing and fro-ing, they couldn't (read wouldn't) even come near the offer I already had. Cunningham BMW were quite frank in the end, so I appreciated them not wasting my time.

Chalk another one up for Philippe!

Sorry to hear of your poor experience with Concord BMW. Both of mines have been from there and it's always been on the up and up. I'm actually confused why your CA advisor didn't e-mail you a screen shot of the lease calculations before you went in.

My CA send me a screen shot when all the residuals and MF were announced.

I doubt if you'll want to deal with them anymore, but I can recommend my CA if you're still interested. He's well known on here and highly recommended by those who have dealt with him.

I know-i chalk it up to them thinking they can pull me into the finance room like adrian mentioned then increase the price. I have now been in contact with other nearby dealers and they have provided me with the screenshots...simple and easy to follow. Hopefully will have a car sometime this weekend.

Bait and Switch is not something BMW dealerships should not do but these guys have done it many times. These guys should be selling Yugos and not BMWs.

Avoid them at all cost. Call Victor Hung at Peter Pan BMW (bmwsale.com) if Peninsual works for you. No hassle at all. Clear upfront and polite. Use my reference if you need to.

True enough, which is why I went to Camarillo and Steve Thomas BMW (via a one way rental car) to buy the M Coupe.

I will say that Concord BMW has an excellent parts department - Glenn there is great to work with.
