Either the guy screwed up or I have a VW BMW.

The "service engine light" came on so I took the 2004 to a local Autozone. They check the codes for free.

The code that came up was: P0597

OEM Brand: Volkswagen
Definition: Thermostat Heater Control Circuit Open
Explanation: Open or Short Circuit condition
Probable Causes: Poor electrical connection or failed engine cooling thermostat.

Any ideas?

BTW...The X3 isn't running hot and I don't smell anti freeze. Plus I released and reinstalled the gas cap and the light did go out but came back on a day later.

Sounds like they need to update their codes.

Well, if it was a gas cap issue, give it a few days to extinguish itself. If it still continues, then a trip to the dealer may be necessary

Just stopped at a local STS Dealer. The manager is a personal friend.

So he did the code check and got 279E Thermostat Reference: Field Final Stage.

Is the thermostat going bad? I always thought either they worked or not. Plus after shutting it off twice and restarting, the service engine light didn't come back on again... so far.

Could this be covered under the 6 years, 100,000 warranty (I have 54,000 miles).
