Hello all. Great forum. I'm a brand new member to the site. Trying to do some research as I'm contemplating picking up a 6-series cab and am looking for some advice and/or recommendations.

I'm currently driving an '00 Porsche 911 C2 Cab. Great car, undoubtedly the best I've ever owned (inclusive of BMW's and Merc's). However, practicality is starting to take a precedence and it's just not getting the job done (outside of FAST, that is). Let me explain... We've got a 21-month old daughter and aren't preventing #2. Car seat in the back prevents anyone from riding in the passenger seat comfortably with or without child- though with is MUCH more constricting. Golfing? Only if by myself or meeting someone at the course. My bag sits in the seat next to me. This is my daily driver- approx. 82k on the clock. When driving by myself with the top down and not concerned about work calls coming in, the spartan interior of the Porsche is great. Take any one or more of those conditionals out of the equation, the lack of amenities get almost frustrating, not to mention noisy.

Wife already has a weekend roadster- absolutely loaded Z4- and we've got an SUV baby mover so I'm considering moving to a 6-series cab to get into something that still has the "fun" factor of a convertible, has decent pick-up, and has a lot more creature comforts, MOST IMPORTANTLY SIZE. Went to the local dealer yesterday to look at the M3, 650/M6, and M5. M3 was too small- not gaining much on the 911. M5 lost all of the open-top fun, though it is fast. 6 fit pretty well- babyseat fit in the back with ample room for the wife in the passenger seat. Finish and features were top notch- loved comfort access and HUD. Actually tested the M6 cab and was surprised and disappointed in the pick-up and speed. To be completely fair though, I didn't really try to open it up with the family in the car and I don't really care much about staying in a 4.4 second car anyway- think the salesguy assumed he could upsell me just b/c I'm currently a Porsche guy. 5 to 5.5 0-60 times are plenty for me.

So here's where I am... I've almost decided not to buy new. Yes, I can get everything I want EXACTLY how I want it, but I'd rather not drop the additional cash with a potentially growing family. I'm really looking at '06 and '07 650Cic's now as the depreciation has hit them and the delta is pretty significant (not trying to start anything or pick, just my observation- think I haven't experienced just that in my 996?). So, I'm weighing in my mind whether to go with an '07 from auction or private or an '06 CPO. They seem to be selling for around the same amount. LOVE the CPO additional warranty, prefer the newer car and can settle for adding aftermarket warranty if I have to.

I'm trying to evaluate what the MUST HAVE's are on the car to really start my search. From reading the forums, sounds like Sport Package is one of them. I did really like the HUD, but I'm sure that I could do without it if I had to. Comfort access would be a nice to have, as well, but I guess I could get by without. I really do want Sirius in the car- are all of them at least pre-equipped? Looks like the woods/aluminum can be easily switched out so that's not one of my driving purchase factors. I'd really like the SMG, but they seem hard to find. Are they that rare? Secondly, I'd go with a 6-speed, then lastly a slushbox with paddles. I am a HUGE fan of the brown/cinnamon color interiors. Was something in that family available in the 06's and/or 07's? Were there any changes to iDrive between the 06 and 07 models that make a substantial difference? iPod integration would be nice, but no deal breaker. Do all the cars have the capability?

Lastly, what else would you advise to search for option-wise? I'm just not well versed enough in the car yet to really know. Any other things that you'd encourage looking at?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I have an m6 and truly love it! I also have a lotus so I know what you mean by spartan interior.

The 6 series bimmer's are amazing and definitely comfortable for your needs...I haven't driven a 650 but in my m6 the options I love are HUD, CF interior,SMG(much more convenient in traffic), comfort access... I don't think you need sports package if speed is not your priority...is a must in an m6 though.

I agree but used and let someone else depreciate the car....as long as it is under warranty you should be fine.

Also check out m6boards.com for more info...

Personally I think the only "must have" is the Sport Package. With that you get better seats, rims, and the shadowline trim. Up here in the North East, the Cold Weather package is a must have. Even if you garage the car for the winter. Driving below 60 degrees with the heated seats on, the temp turned up, and the top down is awesome. The HUD was a big incentive for me to buy a 6. I've never turned it off since I got the car. It's cool and it works. Its surprising how infrequently I find myself looking at the analog speedometer. Comfort access is also great if you can get it. But both HUD and Comfort access is not a must have but really, really cool.

The Saddle Brown interior only came out in 2008. The "big color" prior was the Chatueax (sp?) or burgundy red interior. Sometimes this looks good, sometimes not, it's really a matter of preference. Pearl Leather over the standard Dakota leather is a nice upgrade. In 2008 the pear leather upgrade also included a leather upgrade on the dash and center console wich really made this option attractive (for me anyway).

Other than that, the other options are pretty much a case of what you want to pay for now versus upgrading to later.

Good luck in your search and post pics when you make a purchase (only if its a 6 though) :)
