My dad just replaced the o-rings and gaskets on this huge motor and now that it's all put back together, it does NOT go over 2000 RPMs / 30mph... can anyone please help me with this? Thanks so much. It's a 1990 750IL.

You are probably in Limp Home mode. That means that one bank of cylinders is not firing and is dragging down the other 6 cylinders.

Look here http://www.e38.org/e32/

And here http://bmwe32.masscom.net/

What O-rings and Gaskets were replaced?

How do you fix this problem?

Check that the sensors on the number 6 and 12 cylinder spark plug wires are plugged in correctly and the spark plug wires are secure.

Check the wires from the coil to the distributors are secure on both ends.

If the timing cover gaskets were changed -check the connections to the crank position sensors and DK motors are all secure.

Also check the connections to the air flow sensors on the intakes.

Remember that the air flow sensor and the DK throttle motor are on the opposite side of the engine from the cylinders that they feed.

The EML light comes on as well..... also, we've unhooked the battery overnight (must have reset something) because the next morning it ran like a champ, but after turning it off and restarting it was back to the old problem.... any suggestions?

My advice, take it to a certified bmw tech, not your dad :)

I took it to a bmw tech and he couldn't figure it out either...well, without spending over 4000 dollars in parts and labor!!!! THE EML LIGHT IS ON, BUT HE SHOWED ME HOW TO TRIP THE COMPUTER BY REMOVING THE #20 EML FUSE, THEN UNHOOKING THE #2 OR #3 COMPUTER MODULE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE FUSEBOX. THIS WORKS SOMETIMES BUT NOT ALL THE TIME. EACH MODULE THAT NEEDS REPLACED COST $1000, $4K TOTAL.... IS THERE ANY WAY AROUND THIS THAT ANYONE KNOWS OF?
