My07MY530i lease expires in three weeks. I was hoping to lease an09MY535i, but dealer says no deliveries til Mid Oct, and no prices as yet. I am hesitant to invest here because of projected changes in sheet metal for 2010, and improvements in iDrive sometime in 2009(rumors, rumors!). Of course there are deals on 08MY (financing, etc)if I am flexible with colors and equip (all I really want is leather, rear side airbags), but the second you drive it off the lot, the depreciation is killer.
Contract residual is $37, but dealer offering to sell for $33,400.

Should I be looking to extend the lease for a year, or buy out the lease and hope I can sell it in 18 months to get what I want? I would have to take a four year loan to get the monthly payment I can handle, so that leaves me with two risk factors=only 24 mos. left on the maintenance plan, and market price for resale in the future. I have previously gone with the lower trade in to avoid the hassle of selling on my own.

Any thoughts here?

I'm not as up on 5ers as some, but unless BMW brings the new 5er to market a year earlier than usual the new model shouldn't be here until fall 2010 as a 2011 MY. Since they just facelifted it for MY2008 it makes no sense to me they would only get two model years out of the facelift.

It is sounding more and more like the 5er will not get the new I-Drive until MY 2010.

If I were in your shoes I'd think about buying out the lease you have or going ahead with a new lease/purchase on an '08 that's on the lot. I don't know how common rear side airbags are, so I guess that might present a problem.

If you act quickly, with the 0.9% financing you might be able to swing purchasing an '08 and just plan to drive it for four years (the term of the warranty) and then look at picking up an end of the model year 2012 or a 2013 5er after they have time to work out the bugs in the new design.

If you happen to decide to buy the car you have now, here's an excellent source of financing at 4.5% up to 60 months - https://www.penfed.org/productsAndRates/loans/vehicleLoans/usedAutoLoans.asp , anyone can join - https://www.penfed.org/howToJoin/overview.asp

If I were in your shoes, I would do a 2 year lease on a 2008. The big upgade in the 5er was between 2007 and 2008 with the tt engine. The payment difference isn't that great between a 2 and 3 year lease. The residuals have been better, but you should offset tha by negotiating a pretty sweet final cap reduction since its the end of the model year. By the time that is up, the new 5er will be out and not be the brand new model, so the bugs will be worked out. There isn't much difference between a 2008 and a 2009 except maybe the upgraded idrive (not a big deal). Rear airbags may be tough to find unless the car is loaded. Have your dealer do a search of locally available inventory. Good luck

I'm still undecided. Credit union will lend me 33k at 6.25% over 4 year ($725), but I might go for the 2year lease (w or w/o the rear side airbags), just to eliminate the hassle of selling th 2007 in two years when I still owe money on it. Will see if I can get a 30 month lease, and see about ED.

If you can buy the car for $37 I'd do it. If, on the other hand, it is $33,400 I wouldn't. You could do a 2 year on an '08 or just buy one using the .9% financing.

Ja. That little "k" is missing.

btw - this thread is a double post and answers have started to be given in the first post. Do you have the ability to combine the threads, Jonathan?

Happily I can say "nein" but I do know whom to tell.

If you have good credit score at Equifax, you can get 4.24% for 4yrs at Agriculture Federal Credit Union. I had to pay $25 up front to open an account and become a 'member'. I got approved very easily with approx 750 credit score. Just thought I'd mentioin it since its quite a big difference in rate.

New iDrive is in all 2009 BMWs. There are other changes as well (80GB hard drive, etc.).

Rumor has it, the new iDrive is very easy to use.

Your best deal will be on an remaining 08 however. The 09s go into production in Sept and normally take until the end of the month if not mid-October to get here. That's why your dealer is telling you Oct.

.no, not all 2009 BMWs :yikes:

There are other changes as well (80GB hard drive, etc.).No, the hard drive is an integral part of the CIC (which is the iDrive system) - it's not something that can be filed under the rubric of "other changes"

.Very easy to use. Not that the older version was terribly difficult. This is just much easier.

Yeah, as JSpira says, 5ers are getting the short end of the stick this year. Gotta wait until MY2010.

Wow. A rare find that beats PenFed (for 48 months). I thought only Navy Federal ever beat PenFed.

yes, the 80GB HDD is for the NAV - but can also store music - YES?

I show the 2009 M5 and M6 getting the new IDrive. Why would the rest of the 5-series not get it?

For M5 and M6

* New sideview mirrors with increased field of view
* EfficienDynamics implemented (brake energy regeneration systems, electrically powered (rather than fuel powered) auxilary systems such as the air conditioning allowing the engine to perfomr more efficiently
* Updated IDrive system with new I Drive button
* New navigation which includes 3D mapping and gidance software
* For Navigation Professional 8,8' screen with 1280x480 pixels resolution. Gull screen map is possible,
* Integrated Smartphone connectivity with US-commection for Apple IPhone and other smartphones
* BMW ConnectedDrive for Europe which allows full in car internet browsiing (Europe only)
* 80 GB harddrive

I never said anything was "NAV" specific. Storing music is still part of iDrive and the CIC.

I did not say anything to the contrary.

Sorry, you probably wanted me to say, all US spec BMWs with IDrive will have the new 2.0 version for 2009 - yes?

edit: Still not sure where you are going with the 80GB drive thing...

Do a little searching. The word is not absolutely definitive, but it is out there that the 5er will not get the updated I-Drive for MY2009. The BMW publications out to date seem to indicate this.

Actually no. The X5 and X6 won't get the CIC until at least March 2009 production and I wonder of those cars will then become MY2010 (just guessing here). But at the start of 2009 production, those cars will have the CCC, not the CIC.

Re 2.0, BMW's count is off - they are actually up to 4.0

Not a bit deal but you had said " There are other changes" and while there are tons of changes in this area, they all are part of the new CIC system (aka iDrive). Some may consider this a difference without distinction but it's not.

BMW NA itself has seemed uncertain about when the MY2009 E60s will get the CIC.

Since almos everyone there is on holiday at the moment, I haven't even bothered to ask if there was an update.

But a few weeks ago, NA was certain that the 2009 E60s were not getting the CIC, at least at SOP.

It's really impossible to predict until they send out the BMW NA news release or the BMW NA E60 brochure leaks out.

You know, if you can find an 08 that you like, the lease deals are incredible right now (I saw MF of .0016 I think). The residuals are OK, but still, I bet you might even be able to lower your lease payment. Let us know what you find.

BMW is not certain about the new iDrive and there is little confirmed because most likely it is full of bugs.

They barely got all the bugs worked out of the current iDrive and now they are swapping everything out again.

Holy crash batman!

I would not be rushing for the new iDrive. Take it from someone who has had several BMWs with iDrive. It is not worth the trouble even on a lease.

I'll agree that the first gen ones are going to have their share of updates - but hey, we drive BMWs and we like new technology :)

So I ended up with a 3 year lease on a 2008 535i. Dealer "waived" the $350 turn in fee, and paid the $150 for 800 excess miles (moving to 12K annual this time). Dealer "reduced" the money factor to .016, claiming that it was originally .02 and I was getting the .004 reduction for owners loyalty program. They tried to talk me into accepting a model with the keyless entry for $1k. I said 'no way, give me the other one (same color combo--black w/ cream beigeleather) which had the nav., for the same lease price, and they agreed. So I got premium package, ipod adapter, and nav. No security deposit, no cap reduction+ $770/month, which is what it would have cost me to buy my old car. I am sure this is not the very best deal, but I am satisfied with what I got, and spent only an hour at the dealer, who did not presure me on lojack, "dent warranty" or anything else. She's a beauty and the twin turbo kick a$$.

$770/mo for a 535i? That's way tooo high man :yikes:

MF should be 0.12 (after OLP) and there's a ZPP credit on the 535i. Add in MSDs and you can get the car in $600 range.
