I was with a friend today going to lunch when we spotted a Mini driving by, and she told me it was cute and said she kinda wanted to check it out. So I suggested we head over to a Mini dealer and do just that...

They were a bit low on inventory. Only 4 on the lot... Mr. Friendly Salesman came out to greet us, and we talked a bit... I asked if we (she) could take one for a test drive. He said no problem, we can take the regular Mini out and went in and grabbed the keys. Meanwhile we're looking at the 4 they have on the lot... we discover they're all manual tranny. She can't drive stick... so I end up driving.

I have to say that for such a small car, it has some pretty decent pickup and go.... with 3 people in the car, I could still feel the pull as I rowed through the gears approaching 4000rpm... :)

As far as handling goes... I didn't get a chance to really see what it could do. Oh well.... :dunno: The medium speed right turn I did make felt rock solid though at least... need more seat time to make a better assessment.

DBW throttle didn't seem as laggy as my 330.... :banghead: What's up with that.... in fact, there was no hesitation or anything else that I'm used to in my own car's DBW system. (At least... none that I noticed)

We might make another trip down to the MINI dealer when they get some Auto equipped ones so she can actually drive one. Of course she told me that if I taught her how to drive a manual, then she wouldn't have to worry about what tranny is there.... :eeps:

We'll see how adventurous I feel if she brings that up again... :eeps:

Drive a Cooper S... The regular Cooper feels very slow after that! When my girlfriend was shopping for cars last year, we went to the newly opened MINI dealer for a test drive. She couldn't stop talking about it and put a deposit down a couple days later. We've had our Cooper S now since last July.

I'll have to see if they even have any Cooper S models available for test drives. But then... the whole point was to have my friend be able to check out the car, but she can't drive stick. :dunno:
