Just think of it as a great sun/rain/snow shade above your head as you unload or load what you need to in the back. I really do miss the rear window opening to put small items inside and to keep large items from rolling out when you park facing up on a hill. I believe the X5 does have a separate window in the rear door, perhaps the new X3 might as well.

The hammer should be applied against designer's head.

Or bean counter trying to save a buck.

Agree. But it is irritating anyway. Touring has it (Even cheap Vibe has it)

If the touring rode a little bit higher I would be on another board. I really liked my e90 328i but getting in and out with my bad back was too much. Being so used to trucks I also "ran it aground" a couple of times which is another plus for the higher X3.

I too wished the X3 had this............but alas it doesn't.
