Hi all. I have an 08 528i which is about 2 weeks old and has approx 400 miles. This morning while I was letting the car warm up I heard what appears to sound like a small valve tap. I have gotten gas twice so far (I top off before using reaching half a tank so I don't get hit with a big amount) using Sunoco Premium (not ultra). This morning was the first time I heard this noise. Is this normal in break-in period; I am being paranoid? Thanks in advance for the input

There's no need to let modern cars warm up (plus it wastes gas). Of course, you want to let the engine come up to operating temp before any spirited driving. ;)

Sorry, can't comment on the noise.

I've got a new 528i. No tapping noise here on 87 octane (that's what the dealer filled it up with).

I don't think that noise would be normal, since it's so new, have the dealer check it over immediately.

BTW, gassing up more often only means you pay more times, the amount used (spent) remains the same - the logic escapes me. Extra work for nothing IMO. :)

I would think that it actually costs you more $ to fill up more often, since you're making extra trips (presumably) out of your way to get to the gas station...

You're safe if it's directly along your path home, though!

I thought we are supposed to use the premium (91 octane), no?

we are but the car CAN run on 87 as it has a knock sensor to lower the compression. the dealer was just being cheap, stick to premium unless not available no matter what

Seach this forum (and others) for "lifter noise" or "Vanos noise". Apparently it is common and according to the dealer where I test drove a car with it, nothing to worry about. Also, if it's in the first few seconds of the engine running, this is normal for any hydraulic lifter engine.

In addition, the extra weight of a half-full to full tank lowers your MPG vs. driving on the lighter weight 1/8th tank....:bigpimp:
