I'm so amazed with what happened today, I was driving on a 4-lane highway 45 mph aprox., left lane passing a Camry tha decided to change lanes exactly when I was beside her! My right rear view mirror was a good help as the reflexion of the car was on the whole mirror!
I just can but to say, I'm amazed of how the X3 responded! I don't even know how I saw that car coming, had to make a quick and hard left maniouver (sp) and put it back on track to avoid any oncoming traffic. No time or good idea to brake. The car responded instantly and sharp, even before my heart started raising. Not a single sign of loosing control, nor bodyroll or anything.
Today I felt more confident with that ultimate handling, it really pays to have a BMW.

Have a similar story to share:
In my 05 X3, following the traffic flow, doing 80ish and conversing calmly with my passenger (a professionally trained driver by the US State Department). for some reason, I am not riding the middle of the lane but I am more on the left side of it, without crossing or riding on the dividing lines. In front of me, at a reasonable distance, a minivan that rides in the middle of the lane, drives over (without touching it) a large (especially for a roadway at 80ish) rock that is a bit off the center of the lane. Had I be driving in the middle of the lane, like the minivan driver, I too would have drove over it without a problem. Because of my relative position in the lane though, my passenger side wheels were in perfect alignment with the rock (meaning that I was looking at least at serious suspension damage, if not an accident altogether), so i swerved instinctively to drive around it.... without even letting my foot of the gas pedal... without even stopping the conversation.... !!! A few seconds later, after the event started sinking in and both my passenger and I had a chance to confirm the traveling speed, we were both thoroughly impressed (to say the least). Friends that were following in a different car and saw me swerving, were equally impressed by the mere observation of the car's handling.
So yes, they are the ultimate driving machines... To those who may argue, let me remind you that I am talking about a stock small SUV without any performance or handling enhancers.
Side note: I am on my second X3 and though I would prefer the tautness of the 05's suspension, I do love this car equally. I did however drove a friends 335i MT and was stunned at the nearly beastly characteristics of this unassuming, 4 door sedan. Made my X3 feel like a ford van for a few brief (thank God) minutes after getting back in to it. Lesson: don't test drive until you are ready to change one ultimate driving machine for another.

Sign up for a driver's ed event with your local BMW CCA chapter. You'd be surprised at how much abuse they can take, and how well they respond in the most critical of situations.
