I had this problem too. The wiper is connected to a bar and is rotated with the motor. For me a bushing for the bar got worn down and the bar got stuck on this ridge. Therefore frying the motor. A wiper motor change......to me... was a difficult task of removing and replacing. My suggestion is to change the whole motor, seeing as if you have the same problem you'll need to replace the bar with the bushing. And if you'll be doing that, You'll need to take out the motor anyway. Might as well put a 30$ fresh one back in.
In the end, it's worth it.
Also if your wipers end up stopping in the middle of the window, you'll need to force the motor to rotate the bar from top to bottom or bottom to top. if you open the vent infront of the window on the right side of the car, you'll see perfectly of what i'm talking about.... you'll see but wont really be able to touch. It's a difficult space to wiggle out of...

so i took off the inspection plate or whatever it is to get to the wiper motor and found that all of the bolts to the motor were loose as well as the nut on the wiper moter itself. so i tightend them up and found that the motor works fine but the shaft is stripped. the nut will tighten but after a few rotations of the wipers it loosens itself. the problem is that i cant get the nut off. any ideas?

Weld it until you can get a new motor/shaft.
No state inspection requirments where you live? Either way I'd be worried about visibility and get it fixed ASAP. Good luck!

The nut doesn't come off. From what i noticed on my job. It's secured into place. If this is the correct nut that i'm talking about....? You can find a replacement nut and arm on part sites anywhere... But i didn't waste my time on that. I had a spare e30 parts car to replace the motor. SO i don't necessarily think i can help you much more..? Sorry...

I know this might be off subject but I got a 85 325e about 2 months ago Im new to bmw..Everytime I turn my wipers on lowest level my radio sounds like it wants to cut off towards the end on the wiper cycle and the wiper actually really slows down towards the end..Thanks in advance for any response..Ill be asking more questions soon hope u guys dont mind..

Could be a short, check your wiring for your deck. And also check the wiring for the windsheild wiper motor something might be loose and taking energy away from something else

And yea the arm from what i found can only come off with the entire motor. I wouldn't exactly know, when i got the motor out i was too excited to put the newer one back in i didn't think to check what was wrong with the old. anddd, that's in the junk yard now........ You can go look for it if you want!!!!!! jk.....
