I have a 2003 BMW Z4 2.5 Roadster. The fuel gauge on the dash displays empty with the low fuel light on even when there is a full tank. I tried taking the key out of the ignition when fueling and didn't top off the tank thinking it may reset the sensor but didn't work. I have reason to believe it may be the fuel sending unit or sensor. Please advise me what is wrong with my fuel gauge problem. What replacement parts are necessary, where can I get them, and how much is the cost. All replies are greatly appreciated. Please respond with all replies to benjamingrenzer@yahoo.com

Hi Benjamin,

Did you ever get a response to your fuel guage question?

I have a 2003 Z4 and am also having gauge issues. My gauge shows 1/2 a tank even after I fill it up. The guage will go to empty after about 150 miles but when I try to fill the tank it only takes about 4-5 gallons.

After a length of troubleshooting, I came to the resolution that the entire fuel sending unit which is located in the gas tank needed replacement. The fuel filter sensor should also be replaced as well to eliminate any potential future failure of the fuel level indicator on the dash. These parts cannot be obtained anywhere except through the dealer. Call the BMW parts department tell them that you are an independently owned shop so you don't have to pay $Mark Up$ and the two parts should cost you about $300.00. Do the work yourself in on the weekend by simply draining the gas from the tank, remove the tank from the car, remove old fuel sender assy, and re-install new one and put the tank back together and good to go.
