View Full Version : Clunk Noise from the Front!

So.. I inherited a 97 328i (Auto, Current mileage 115K) and had some work done on it already however I'm getting a lound clunk noise when I brake firmly either from driving forward or from reverse. The noise I think is coming from the front driver's side (although occasionally it sounds like it's coming from the rear)

I've looked over the various threads here but I'm not sure if it's really a suspension problem - here's why - I spent close to $4K on the suspension at the beginning of the year.. which pretty much covers all suspension components.

Labor Service - REAR SUBFRAME BUSHINGS R&R
New Subframe Bushing Kit
New Subframe Bushings- E36 (Rear)

Labor Service - E36 STRUTS/SHOCKS
New KONI E36 SPORTS (COMKONI E36 SPORTS (COMPLETE)

Labor Service - TIE RODS
New 32 11 1 139 315 Tie Rod Assembly
New 32 11 1 139 316 Tie Rod Assembly

Labor Service - LCAB - Bushings Only
New 31 12 9 069 035 Control Arm Bushing Kit

Labor Service - RTAB Replacement
New RTAB SHIMS RTAB SHIMS
New 33 32 2 228 153 Trailing Arm Bushing

I also just put a new set of Brakes (UUC Rotors and Hawk Ceramic Pads) with steel braided brake lines.

I diagnosed that the noise appears only once in either direction i.e. when I brake from driving forward it'll clunk - the noise never appears again UNTIL I brake from reverse and I hear the clunk in that direction first. It seems like some component is moving back and forth between two positions.

What am I missing?? Any clues?

Thanks!!

Sounds like control arm bushings. Got to jack the car up and look.

Possibly the guibo. Are you sure its coming from the front?

I had the guys that installed my brakes (last weekend) take a quick inspection on the suspension parts .. they said it was ALL on solid - they also thought it could have been my LCABs.

I'm about 90% sure it's coming from the front driver side.

I don't think it's the flex disc .. because it's not when I apply power - it's more when I apply the brakes and the car comes to a stop.. it really does sound like the suspension problem heh..?
