It doesn't look that much smaller than the X3. Is it supposed to replaced X3? or slot in below X3?

That was my initial reaction too. But I think it's mainly due to the CG renderings of the car. In the video where Adrian VH introduces the X1, it looks MUCH better. I kinda like it now.

A BMW spokesperson said it probably won't be coming to the US because of the financial situation.

Where did you read that? The current plan is for all SAVs and SACs to be built in Spartanburg. I guess it would be possible for the car to be built for export only, but I'd say that's pretty unlikely.

It doesnt look that bad, but howmuch smaller than teh X3 could it possibly be:dunno:
I dont think much... I guess its something like teh rogue. In between a car and a crossover:dunno:

The next generation X3 will be growing. The X1 will supposedly share its platform with the upcoming MINI crossover thingie.

From "Edmunds Inside Line"

"Landing it in North America at a competitive price under the prevailing economic conditions is apparently proving impossible. 'We would like to see the X1 offered in North America, but at the moment it is a difficult business case to justify,' a high-ranking BMW source told Inside Line. "

Hmmm. Possible, but I think that official is just floating a trial balloon. If it's made here then the business case should be palatable--certainly more palatable than exporting a rest-of-the-world-only SAV.

Well, that's the point. Even though the new X3 will be made in the US, the X1 won't be.

Actually I view this as a kind of SUV-meets-hot-hatch concept. I kinda like it, depending on how usable it is, since most hot hatchbacks are very useful given their size.

Neato!

It certainly looks better in Silver than that ugly-ass golden-orange. I like the black roof, does that mean it'll have a huge moonroof like the X3? It's supposed to be more affordable but it'll have iDrive (and xeons and PDC)? $30k or ***8364;30k?
I love my X3 but a loaded 2009 going for $50k is farking ridiculous.

These are old chops from a while back. The pictures of top are of the actual car. I have seen the proportions and lines, the silver car does not match up and the nose is much more pig like..... like the gold car. You will see it this week in full form.

Eventually we will see X1's X3's X5's and even an X7... The way things are going now they are aiming for smaller SUV/ Crossovers which are more economical. To me the X1 to X3 is something like the Rouge to the Murano... X5 to X7 would be the CX-7 to the CX-9...:dunno:

I'm really liking it now. The profile--and polarizing opinions--reminds me of the M Coupe when it first came out. I hope they give this car enough power--I can totally see myself lowering it and creating a more wagon-like vehicle.

WOW, now that is a REALLY nice crossover. It doesnt look as girly as the X3, and much sportier. Or is it only me?:dunno:

That's really too bad, because the older silver prototype looks interesting but the live pictures on Autoblog of the golden one look like arse. It's like they were determined to shave off any personality, it's even more boring looking than a Lexus!

It's not bad. Maybe the production model will have added molding ala X5 to give it a beefier appearance.

I hope it does make it over here, as this is the first crossover vehicle I could conceivably see myself driving (in a couple of years, if/when we start having kids.)

Of course, diesel engine would probably be essential to make this one a winner.

The X7/V7 is dead. BMW announced they were discontinuing work on the big crossover months ago. They foresaw lack of demand.

I don't know where you're getting your info from, but the BMW comments from Paris were extremely vague about the details and launch date about this car. Also, the car in Paris is the gold one, NOT this silver early study. The way has been been presented (a concept car with no interior) suggests that the brakes have been applied and BMW will go very slow if not defer this product until it's primary market recovers. There are many millions at stake and no amount of marketing is going to help sell SUVs right now. It should be noted that Audi seems one step ahead with showing their new mini-SUV at Paris which will be a plug-in hybrid. Timing isn't great for them either, but the hybrid part gives them an angle.

I drove beside one of these on the A9 near Munich headed north last Thursday. I was covered in that black and white swirl camo that BMW seems to be using lately. It's chase vehicle was an X5. I couldn't make out which engine it had but guessing that since it was here in Europe it was probably a diesel. It's bigger than I thought it would be, not as tall as an X3/5 but almost as long as the X5. Nice looking car, from what I could make out with all of the blakc and white swirls all over it. It was funny, after I spotted and caught up with with then slowed to have a good look at it, the driver gave me a smirk and then slowed down. I couldn't slow with him because of the traffic.

I also had what looked like one of the rumored X5M's blast past me on the same road, heading south today. I was doing about 180 kph and it flew past. but I got a glimpse of the exhaust and it was the one seen in some of the spyshots. It's chase vehice was a black 7 series.

BMW has been figuring on a November 2009 sale date with deliveries starting in North America in early 2010.

At least that is the current rumor floating around.

We'll see.

13 cm lower, about 11 cm shorter and a couple cm narrower. Mainly it's just a lot lower than the X3, making it more like a BMW Allroad for the 1 series. See the attached review of a recent road test

I love my current X3 but when the lease expires in fall '09 I hope this X1 in diesel is available in the states. I think the size and engine options can be attractive for those that are eco friendly not to mention the BMW driving mechanics and some hauling utility. The pictures are hitting my sweet spot. :)
