I've just received the green light to begin working on this 77' 320i BMW......but theres a problem. I have no idea what type of engine this is....i know the body style but the engine was swapped and im lost. I left some pictures below.... if anyone has any idea what type of engine it is i would appreciate any information i can get. What i know now is this....where the engine ID is there is the following code: +5000980+, and thats all. The block has a casting code on it which is: 12524460. It is an inline 6 with 3 weber carbs, a four speed manual and tons of power. All the websites say the engine should have a code like M30 or some sort of mixture of numeric and alphabetic code.....but i cant find one anywhere. Im guessing its a M30 but theres so many styles im not sure which one it is (if it even is an M30 style engine).

Other random numbers i found on the block: (12500199), (5C74), (53624)...the last one was on the tappet cover next to the engines oil cap.

have check out the Alpina sites...it looks like one from the CL(Alpina) to me and yes they used a m30 back then...I hope this may have helped you out there...that must be a very fun car drive too....you can't have enough power on hand...hehehehe...

Probably an M30. But Im not sure. Should have some displacement code on the head.

I ask all my E21 questions at Bimmerforums.

Left hand side couple lines down Weber Carb conversion kit for 318 and 320`s
So possibly just a m30 with a conversion?? idk
