I just returned from a 3 week ED in an E90 M3 and the question was raised why the fuel consumption was so much worse than my friends previous car an E39 M5. Both cars are close in horsepower but the M3 did far worse on a gallon of fuel. Also both cars are 6MT transmissions, so that should not be an issue. In fact the mileage was about the same as I got when I did an ED in 06 with my M5.

I'm getting 16-17 mpg on my commute to work.

What mpg are you getting with the E39 and the E9X? Also, how many miles do you have on the E9X? Your mileage will definitely improve with more miles on your car.
The M3 has a higher rev'ing, which tend to be less fuel efficient than engines with similar power outputs and lower redlines.

We both thought the revs were higher on the M3 than on the M5 but we didn't feel like driving 85 on the autobahn when we had the opportunity to do much better legally.

I have 13K on mine now and I still can't quite get to 21mpg on the highway. It really hasn't changed much at all since it was new.

So, those of you with the 6MT version of the E9x M3, what is a good real world estimate of your average highway/city mileage?
I drive about 70% highway and 30% city, and I am a "performance" driver (I accelerate rapidly most of the time, drive fast, and always try to take the long and winding route for fun). What do you guesstimate I could expect for mileage? 15 or so?

It will get better as it gets broken in.
At 6k miles I get 20 mpg highway @ 80 mph/16 mpg city.

I'm still in break in and am getting 14 in the city and about 20 on the highway.
My wife's 08 Sequioa with a 5.7 litre V8 gets better mileage. Even when it was new.
Another 450 km before I can wind it out a bit and get some really bad mileage/:thumbup:

Thanks. Those numbers are better than I expected. I average only about 20-21 in my 330i, so it looks like the increased fuel cost in the M3 is minor.
