the metal shaft on my stick shifter heats up in traffic and remains cool when travelling on highway at a constant speed
is this normal?

I've split your post out into its own thread. If you have a question typically searching will give you the best results, if not creating your own new thread is the way to go.

It's normal. It is heat from the trans, engine and exhaust. The heat gets blown out when you are on the highway. The shifter is not really connected to the trans (just by a small cable). It is soaking up the heat from the top of the trans tunnel.

Hey Bldngblck , Bimmer dot info is right.... I have a Jeep also (91 cherokee w/5 speed Man) and the shifter shaft does tend to get a little warm (meaning hot), but like you say when highway driving it cools off. so yeah its probly ok.
