Routes 7 and 100 in western VT.

You'd better hurry, the leaves are going fast......

Having said that, here in CT - route 7 north from Kent to Canaan is quite extraordinary.

Also, route 22 on the NY side parallel to western CT is quite beautiful - you could drive to Millerton NY then cut over on 44 into CT and travel down to Kent via 7 - a nice day trip.

If you're interest ed in Orange/Sullivan/Ulster Counties, two roads come to mind immediately.

1. Rt 97 out of Port Jervis up to Callicoon. A Spectacular drive winding along the Delaware that is very popular.

2. Rt 55 out of Gardiner over the Shawngunk Mountains while passing through Minnewaska State Park. When you get to Rt 209 in Kerhonkson you can head south to Ellenville and pick up Rt 52 (toward Pine Bush) and climb back over the mountain. From Pine Bush you can pick up Rt 302 and take that down to Rt 17 and head back towards the Thruway and points south.

Both routes have places to pull over and take in the scenery.

Cheers.

Just came back from Litchfield county, and it is about past peak already. Maybe you should consider going West instead of North.

If you choose this route, don't forget to hit 7 Lakes Drive in Harriman St Park on the way back down 17.

Nice going guys. You just gave some homework to do. I am looking forward to this now.

Please keep it coming so I can make a small list off your recommendation in conjunction with Google Maps in Satellite view.

Thank you so much.

Palisade Parkway is always a great way to get out of the city (up north from GWB onwards). Once you get to the Bear Mtn vicinity, there's also Rt 9D which connects the small towns like Peekskill and Cold Spring.

You can also go up to Mohonk or the New Paltz area. Spectacular postcard views if you look out from the Mohonk tower or even from top of the hill, especially at this time. The best value (if you're not staying overnight) is probably making a b'fast appointment (most of the charge is the entrance fee for the entire grounds, so the buffet itself is quite reasonably priced). I might be going up Saturday.

If you're going up to CT, take the Merritt (which in itself is a pretty good drive) as far as you want and then there are plenty of backroads. Further up, there is also Rt 22 (IIRC) from the Chelsea outlet mall up towards Middletown.

Thank you. I hope this thread becomes popular and grows with suggestions. I need pretexts= places to see to drive!

This past Sat, we drove to Woodberry Commons Outlets in Central Valley in NY and took a wrong turn on a round-about half-way through to the destination (off of Palisades Interstate Pkwy N). We ended-up by driving for about 6 miles on an amazing route: curves, ups-and-downs (on Seven Lakes Dr), the colors, the three different lakes along it, people having lunch by lake side)!

Now, I have to pick from your suggestions for this W/E. Can't wait.

It's actually Route 6 West. At the bridge, stay right onto 9D north and venture in to Cold Spring (left on Rt 301) for a bite. Or, cross the bridge and take 9W north up to West Point for some history. Or, hop into the park and go up Perkins Drive for sme nice scenery.

EdCt, Fredric and I met up in Kent Connecticut yesterday and did a repeat of last year's StatusFest run. We drove from Kent to Housatonic State Park on Route y and then headed south to Fairfiled County. There was still a lot of color and it was a spectacular day and maybe the lst top down day of the season. Later in the day we met up with EQU and Larry Schloss.

So we went to Bear Mountain yesterday having seeing we were near it on the GPS and without having researched it at all. We just knew it by name and from people praising it.

We got there at night fall and found out people love it for its hiking trails. It was night time = no go for us but it was fun getting up there.

Captainaudio: it looks like you got yet another W/E and a chance to drive top down again this season.

Good Sunday and week everyone.

Thanks, didn't have time to go further south but the DWG area is generally past peak now. The rain/storms throughout Saturday probably didn't help either. There are still some pockets of color, and finding a baby black bear on the backroads was an unexpected bonus.

That's a nice shot! Hope you post some more from tomorrow's meeting. I am starting to like your Cayman Club more and more each time you show us more of it. I am sure it's good company too.

We went to Hammonasset State Park in CT today.
The roads are really crappy from Manhattan till you hit the I95. How I hate the roads around NYC.
However, the speed limit is 65 mph in CT. I was able to have some fun driving in DS. What an engine!

At the shoreline, the beach great: clean and empty just like I love it. The park closed at 4:30 pm though so we headed back early and on time for dinner and to avoid the snow rain tonight.

A friend of mine stayed at Woodbound (woodbound.com) in NH this past W/E and loved it. They had a cabin in the middle of the woods by a lake, with a fire place, one foot of snow outside and isolated from other humans = good times away from crowded Manhattan.

I drove to West Hampton last Friday just to see the sea. It was very cold but I stood there for 20 minutes and after a few instants of gazing at the sea with the sun above my head, I felt like I was floating. It was beautiful.

You have a really good route planned. Rt 6 intersects with Rt 97 in Port Jervis. Just follow 97 winding along the Delaware and you'll run right into Hawk's Nest.

It's more scenic in the summer/fall, but, still a great run.

Hope everyone is safe and had a great W/E.

I had a wonderful time this W/E.

On Sat I went to Redhook and Rhinebeck upstate New York. I highly recommend lunch at Uncle Chippies on Rt. 9 in Redhook for a good burger.
The Taconic State Parkway I took to get there was simply amazing and fun. Stopped by Bronxville on the way back to NYC.

On Sunday, I hit the road and had a lot of fun getting to Newport, RI though the weather wasn't so good. Mileage was the best I ever got at 520+ miles/ tank doing 75-85 mph 80% of the time and if I recall at least 20 times downshifts at 65-70 up to 100 in DS mode to over-take or just have fun.

I came through there last weekend, having spent the weekend in Woodstock NY.

I crossed the Rhinebeck Br, took 199 through Red Hook and into Millerton NY, picked up 44 through Lime Rock CT and across the northern part of the state.

Great drive!!

Ed,

Good to read. This drive was great. I smiled most of the W/E :)

Question: in a curve, at anything above 50 mph, on uneven pavement, do you find that your front train will lose grip for half a second or so and that the car will want to straight instead of following the curve as per the sterring?

I absolutely hate this about my coupe (2008 E92 335i).

Unfortunately this is the weakest point in our cars. There are so many threads about this topic in here and also bimmerpost.com. I certainly experienced this as well and solved the problem by upgrading the entire suspension system to Dinan Stage III Suspension set up. The difference was day and night. Not only the problem was solved but also the car got faster and much more stable too because better power transfer to wheels. This has to be the single most important upgrade that I decided for my car, period.

With my ZHP, this is not as much an issue, but when I had the Z4, it was.

Stiff suspensions, low profile tires and lack of wheel travel are a bad combo for our roads in the northeast, not certain there's much you can do but slow down on nasty roads.

I don't have the Sport Package (ZHP?), just regular 17" rims and I swapped out the RFTs for non-RFTs MICHELIN PILOT SPORT A/S PLUS.

Yes, the suspension is at fault. I have never had a car do this before and it is *very* disappointing.

Why is the lack of wheel travel is a negative factor. I thought a "direct" steering was better on a performance-oriented car.

Really annoying/ dangerous, isn't it?

What camera set-up/ rig did you use to film your drive. Everybody is telling me to get one of those multi suction mounts such as this one (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/337475-REG/Matthews_427005_Suction_Pump_Cup_with.html).

Well it could have been a lot scarier.

These pics are from a Cayman Club run I was on last autumn.

Fortunately both driver and passenger escaped unscathed.

On these drives there is a huge amount of peer pressure to keep up with the pack because nobody want to be viewed as a wimp. Unfortunately many drivers are encouraged to drive beyond their skill level to keep up with the pack and to make matters worse the driver they are trying to keep up with may be driving beyond his skill level. Compund this with the fact that many drivers are not looking far enough ahead and are fixating on the car ahead of them - this causes the errors of the drivers at the front of the pack to be compounded.

Wheel travel is a suspension issue, not really related to steering, at least not directly.

Imagine jumping off a stone wall if you couldn't bend your knees - you'd likely bounce (well, actually, you'd break your legs, but you get the idea).

Wheel travel is the amount of "travel" the wheel has to go up and down in the wheel well - measured in cars from full droop (as when the car's on a lift) to full compression. So, like bending our knees, the more travel the better all all four wheels can maintain contact - the problem of course is more travel means more body roll, softer ride etc..... there's no free lunch in chassis design.

I am sorry, I thought (steering) wheel travel :D You were talking about how much room the wheel can travel up and down to absorb pavement irregularities.

[QUOTE=v12;4212545]I think there is an annual one in NJ. Here is one I have been meaning to go: http://www.balloonfestnj.com/

This looks like something I would be interested in. Last went to the annual one in Albuquerque a few years ago, and it was great fun. Many good photos too.

Sure. But to speak frankly, I am not sure how to put this together and yet politely avoid the backward-hat wearing crowd. Any ideas?

I went to the Mohonk Preserve in the Hudson Valley last Sat. It was gorgeous. Hiked 5 miles in 3 hours. The drive to get there was fantastic: lots of smaller roads and small villages. When I got tired of driving like a kid with a grin on, I just cruised eating ice-cream while listening to some great tunes with the A/C keeping me cool at 72 degrees.

On Sunday, I went to Flushing (Queens) for the first time ever. We had lunch at a very good dim-sum place and spent the afternoon strolling. I thought I was in South East Asia and it was a lot of fun.

This summer is getting better and better.

Seems this thread (and the tristate BF forum in general) isn't a big hangout for that crowd... as long as you don't advertise on some of the more raucuous forums, you should be ok.

Mohonk is great. What was the route you took up there? I'd love to go back there thru more backroads this time. If you like hiking, check out the Bear Mtn trails near Cold Spring, NY.

The Storm King Highway which runs along the west side of the Hudson River is a great drive.

That looks great.

Finance/ trading burnt me out after doing it for 15 years. I could keep doing it but I need to reset my environment. I am spending more time with people I don't care about than my own family. Something's wrong.

So I have been thinking about getting out of NYC and better than buying a W/E place up-there, I'd like to just live there.

I drive around in Hudson Valley, everything is spaced-out, clean, drivers have good manners, more bang for the buck in real-estate (recently saw 100 acres for $800K for instance).

BUT I wonder: how do people make a living up there?

Would love some insight.

I didn't do much driving this past W/E.

Only went to Hauppauge, NY on Sunday via the 495: it's a much better road than the Shore/ Belt Parkway.

Anyone did anything good?

My last office was in Newburgh, so I drove Storm King every day, after taking the 'goat trail' over the Bear Mountain Bridge. If anything, the ride south has a more spectacular view, as you round a bend at the crest of a hill, and see all of Putnam County spread out for you.

Beautiful.

NYC - Atlantic City this past Sat. I had a good time on some parts of the roads where the two ways were divided by trees.

I am starting to feel that my car's engine has less oooffph these days. It takes more effort to take it to 100.

Hello everyone,

Spent the day in Riverhead, NY and Montauk, NY on Sat. It was amazing.
What a W/E and great way to kick-off the summer!

We had dinner and headed back to the beach where people had come to and set-up bonfires to watch the 4th of July fireworks. It started at 9 pm and the view of it all was stunning: the moon was full and hung right above the ocean, the sound of the waves, the smell of wood burning, the sand in the toes, the company and the fireworks all made for an excellent-excellent way to cap the day.

I need to get back out there again, but the Hamptons/LI traffic turns me off. Maybe after labor day
