I took my car to have the right front tire replaced (thread) (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31228) at Goodyear. They have a Hunter balancing machine in this shop. I was hanging around the shop b/c I wanted to see this maching in action. I heard the guys trying repeatedly to get the tire off my rim. After 15 minutes the manager came out and said they couldn't get my tire off b/c its such a low profile tire. So they told me to go to another Goodyear (which just happens to be down the road from my dealership) and that they have the proper machine to get my tire off. They also told me it would cost $35.

On the way to the other shop, I was mulling over the $35 to get my tire remounted when I could just have the dealeship do it for $20, so i just decided to stop at my dealership and drop the tire off to be mounted later in the week.

When I got out of my car, I inspected my rim to see if there was any damage. The rim was gouged in some places where in other places there were deep scratches about 2-3 inches long (see pics). I was so pissed at this point. All I wanted to do was get this defective tire off my car and instead now I had to get a new rim.

I drove back to the Goodyear dealership and spoke with the manager of the store. I showed him the scratches and explained to him that the rims were only two months old. After looking at them he said that he was sorry this happened but he would take care of it.

The manager told me that he would pay to get my rim replaced. I then asked if he could give this to me in writing, and he did. He asked if the rim was a BMW one and I told him I got it thru Tirerack. I guess he gets wholesale discounts on the rim so he's going to order it today and have it shipped out this week.

One of the things I've learned is that if you don't go in screaming like a lunatic, most managers will do the right thing. This manager is a straight shooter and I'm happy with the way he is handling this.

I just got a call from him (while I'm sitting here writing this) telling me the rim is ordered and it should be here on Tuesday or Wednesday. :D

So overall, I'm upset that this happened but I'm happy with the way Goodyear and the manager is handling the situation.

Here are two pics of the major scratches.

That must be my problem. Note to self, stop acting like a lunatic when someone F's up your car! :D

Just wondering...when the new wheel comes in, are you going to give the damaged one to the GY place or keep it or what?

I'm going to keep the scratched wheel with the defective tire and use it as a spare. :D

I can't believe they replaced the whole thing, I figure a tire shop would just have it machined and polished. :dunno:

Oh, and Pete, I drove through your wonderful city last weekend. It's not as boring as I remembered. :p I would have told you to meet up, but I was with my family and we were on a tight schedule.

Are you coming to Darknights? I've been telling you about it since last summer, you gotta come!

They may not let you keep the wheel, he may decide to keep it on the floor as a display or something. It's great to hear that a manager actually takes responsibility for his shop's actions.

Technically if they replace the wheel, the bunged up one is thiers to keep. The tire of course would be yours.

I was really surprised when he fessed right up and told me he'd replace the wheel. I thought I was going to have to do some arguing with him.

They don't have the equipment to mount the tire or to take the old one off. They also don't sell the GT3 rim, so there wouldn't really be any use for it.

If he ends up wanting it, I'll give it too him.

IMO, the store is getting screwed. Those are really very minor scratches, and can be completely fixed so that the rim is a good as new. I know from experience, with gouges FAR worse than that on my type 68M's.

It's up to you, of course, but since the store manager was such an upstanding guy, you might consider going back and having him just pay for a repair/refinish. It will look the same as a new rim. :)

Any advice is welcome. :D

With the M68's the rim is painted. Can they actually buff out some of the scratches and gouges I have in the rim since it is a polished aluminum lip? I don't know how they would fill in the gouges and buff this out to bring it back to the original shine. If this is a possibility than I can bring it up.

I really don't know what is possible or even any shops around here that repair rims. Buffalo doesn't exactly have a large aftermarket following. If I see a few aftermarket rims on the cars out here, that's a lot. :dunno:

Let him replace the wheel. They screwed it up, they can make it right.

Let him keep the old one to sell to help offset his costs.

Everyones a winner. And the store will get your referrals for friends w/o low profile tires.

Its nice when things can go so well with an auto repair.

I completely disagree. You have a brand new wheel, someone screws it up, it needs to be replaced by a brand new wheel. Pretty simple IMO. A good example is let's say someone smacks your front fender at the dealership and the manager is nice enough to have it repaired by fixing the front fender. Wrong, it needs to be a new fender painted off the car then put back on the car. Just my opinion but replacement of a new part is the only way this would have satisfied the anal owner in most of us

I gotta say I agree with this sentiment.

Glad you had no hassles either Pete (other than the scratches in the first place).

I just got a call from the Manager of Goodyear. The new rim is in so I'm going to pick it up and have Towne BMW mount the new tire on it tomorrow. :D

It turns out the old tire has to be sent back to Tirerack so now, depending on what the manager says, I might have an extra scratched rim with no tire. If this is the case, I'm going to look into getting another tire mounted and using it as a spare.

Here's my story. Six months ago, I bought 4 AVS Sport for my SLK from Tire Rack and took them to the dealer for installation. They quoted me $60 for installation and balancing. When I dropped off the car, I specifically asked the Service Advisor to take a close look at the wheels and make sure they don't scratch them. He checked and acknowleged that everything was perfect. Later, when I went to pick up the car, I was horrified to see ALL 4 wheels were scratched at the edge. Can you imagine this coming from a well known Mercedes dealer? I immediately reported to the Service Advisor, and he had to bring his manager out. After a few minutes of discussion, they offered to repair them for free. I said hell no. I wanted four brand new replacement (they were AMG 17" wheels). Finally they agreed to get me 4 new wheels from the parts store. From that time on, they also changed their policy and are not taking tire installation orders if customers are not purchasing the tires from them.
