View Full Version : 1994 530i Valley Pan Gasket Replacement

I am a new member and have owned a 1994 530i for about 5 years. It had 85,000 miles on when I bought it and currentely has 160,000. It has been a great car without any major problems. Several months ago it began losing cooling fluid. Now it is leaking heavily at the rear of the engine. From doing some research, it seems like it is the Valley Pan Gasket. After being quoted $1,200 to replace it, I joined this forum and bought a Bentley service Manula for the 5 Series (1989 -1995). But, the manula does not really cover replacing the Valley Pan Gasket and I have not been able to find help with the Valley Pan Gasket for the 1994 530i on the forum.
Can anyone be of help? How difficult is the replacement? Any special tools required?

No big deal. Just unbolt and bolt.
But you can't buy the valley pan gasket any more. BMW no longer sells them. Those engineers doodling their time away dreamed up new ways to sock it to the owners. The got rid of the gasket. Instead a bead of rubber is baked onto the pan so you have to ditch the old pan and buy a new one on acount of the gasket.

it is easy
you have to remove the intake maifold to get to it though. and there are 2 pipes that run from the water pump to the cross over pipe at the back of the engine. it was easier to remove the piece at the back instead of removing the water pump, unless you plan on doing the water pump at the same time.
and as yaofeng mentioned, there is no gasket, you have to buy the entire piece.
there is a black plastic cover on the old one that does not come with the new one, the little clips will break when you take it off, i just used silicone to hold mine back on.

If you are as picky as me, get the yellow battery cable clips from the dealer the same time you get the valley pan. They are dealer only item anyway. They become brittle from heat over the years.
