head gasket

I am replacing my head gasket on a 1988 325ix. The one that is supposed to replace it does not seem to be metal but some kind of other material. Has anyone else seen this and do I need to put type gasket sealant on with it?

it should have a metal ring around the combustion chamber and organic material for the rest. now you can get a full metal gasket if you what to spend bout $100+
