i've lost count of the number of repair attempt at the coupe door seal and door rattles. the door seal was replaced 2 times. in the end, they glued it in permanently which bothers the hell out of me because if for whatever reason it has to be removed after the warranty is over, i would have to dish out some $500+ to replace it.  :tsk:

My driver side inner door seal, the one made of out cotten material on the inside just came loose. Is this what you guys are talking about, or the rubber weather seal that contacts with the window?

rubber weather stripping that wraps around the entire opening for the door.

It's funny, all these repair problem posts.

Lots of stuff going awry with these autos, yet how much we love them so. Sort of like a dirty w hore who takes all your money but makes you feel good for the time she comes over.

:tsk:

Oh well...

Since im visiting the dealer for the 4th issue on my car, im taking advantage of the TSBs.

Here's the one i found that im quite fond of:
TSB: 52032 : Creaking/Cracking noise in sport seats .... And i thought it was just me!!

So, i figure this: BMW has a bunch of nice actuary ppl calculating the average warranty work on the car, with that data, they build the costs into the car. So, being an engineer, it would only make sense that I, the consumer, should use what i have originally paid for.

Actually, i noticed bmw's only have slight annoyances which on my '95 corrolla has more of (and i dont really notice since it's a corolla unless i pay attention). Window seal replacements, creaks, musty odors, etc ... most, if not all, I can easily fix myself with some glue/filters/wrench/insider instructions with little or no cost assuming bmw has issued new and updated parts. My coworkers/friends with acuras were left fighting ridiculous TL tranny issues, so i dont mind much at all except for the frequency of visits (which should be a big deal, but i own a bmw, it should be fixed and act perferectly).

Its' really the fact that bmw owners expect their cars to be perfect which cause lots of complaints, but sit in a acura/infiniti, and you can smell/hear the cost cutting on materials everywhere.

Not to hijack the original thread, but that is a really interesting topic of debate. With BMW's reputation for rock-solid relaibility going down in flames, why are so many people, including those with a multitude of problems on their current BMWs, planning on getting another one?

Addictive ride?

Status symbol?

What?

Hard to understand, but if you own a BMW, not too hard to guess...

Pretty easy to explain...

Perfect blend of handling and ride comfort.

Quality build materials.

One of the best driver interiors.

Sweat engine.

Beautiful and aggressive styling combination no other car maker has yet duplicate in an every day driver car.

Ah, stop me lest I wax lyrical...I'm at the First Oil Service (15,500 miles, 9700 kilometers (hi, Alex Baumann - did I get that right? :D )) and, okay, the lower speaker on the driver side door buzzes and I did have to be towed to the dealer (bad cylinder coil 3) - but I'd buy another Bimmer in a heartbeat!

It's the alluring exhaust note; this is the first car I've ever owned where I'll turn off the stereo just to listen to the engine. It's the transformation of an ordinary drive into a pleasurable experience, the way the car just hugs the road and responds intuitively. It's the buttery-smooth shifting - I test drove (all manuals, for I am the Manual Transmission Princess, and believe you me, I put salespersons through some changes, making them find me a manual to test drive! :stickpoke ) the IS300, CTS, S60 T5, Saab 9-3 (olde version, not the new one),Audi A4 1.8 and 3.0, G35 Sedan and Coupe (after they got real transmissions! :p ), Acura CL Type-S - and none of these worthy cars shifted like the Bimmer!

It's the dual-kidney grille, which I think is one of the most beautiful; its the Roundel in the center of the hood. It's the dynamics and ambience of the car - the interior (some find the interior to be almost Spartan, but I find it a welcome relief after the retro/NORAD Command Center Console/look-at-me consoles I've seen)!

Yeah, you drop some serious 'dead presidents', and some dealers have chips on their shoulders the size of Gibraltar (alas, not all dealers are Cutter Motors of Santa Barbara [hi, Jon; Buon Anniversaire!]) but all in all - there's nothing quite like a Bimmer, the raison d'etre for the G35/IS300/A4/TSX/CTS!

car_for_mom, I'm taking mine in for the same lower front door speaker problem in 3 weeks :)

Only major probs I've had with my 2001 330Ci were the moonroof track loosening up (fixed) the HK subwoof rattle (fixed) and the aforementioned speaker problem. All my door seals are in tip top shape however my car was a July 2001 build, maybe they changed the design or material of the seals by then? Or maybe because I keep them dressed in rubber and vinyl dressing when I do the interior? :dunno:

32,000 miles, big ship eating grin when I drive her, still....

Mine too, front door, driver side!!. It has gotten progressively worse in the last 3 weeks. Other than a loose radio antenna and both front window regulators, the car has worked like a charm.

I now have 30,000 miles on this 6/00 built MY2001. It seems like the first/early batch of 330i's had less problems than the currrent ones, just my opinion.

Still, without a doubt my next car, or my second car will be another bimmer!

Exactly my point.

I don't know of any other auto manufacturer that you would "buy again in a heartbeat" if you had to be TOWED to the dealership after a measly 15,500 miles!!!:yikes:

Hmmmm.......

Doesn't seem to be the case with my 06/00 build 330Ci. :thumbdwn:

Very well put. Those are all of the things that attracted me to BMWs-- and my e46 in particular. I haven't had any electrical or mechanical problems (well, atleast none that weren't of my own doing). Only problems have been that I find the seats uncomfortable, and some rattles that I've fixed. Its a shame that the classic, fucntional, beautiful BMW interior is a thing of the past now. The new BMWs still have the driving enjoyment factor-- but they don't make me want to buy them. I'm really at a loss as to what I'll replace my car with-- I'm honestly not interested in anything else on the market (in my price range).

i wonder if they've made improvements in the durability of the interior materials. the centre console rubber coating scuffs easily as is the vinyl interior panels. the dash seems to have these white specs that don't wash off w/ soap'n'water. really annoying.

re: new interiors, i'm not into the retro interiors like the z4 and z8.

This would take some time. Nothing major, but it certainly has had it's share of small problems. I do have a thick amount of repair orders.

My 92 E34 525i has been far less troublesome than my 01 E46 330Ci. To me it's an obvious sign QC is not what it was.

I recently had my dealer adjust the passenger window because it did not fully retract all the way. They did a great job on it, but... Now have have a speaker rattle in that door that buzzes whenever certain frequencies of bass are broadcast out of the radio.

I personally don't think its a car problem most of the time... But it can be a tech problem.
