View Full Version : Outside Mirror Problem

Just got back from doing a European Delivery (highly recommend it btw). When we picked up the car in Munich the outside mirrors couldn't be adjusted. After the head mechanic and head manager spent some time with it, they were able to fix it. If I understood right, apparently, the computer thought that it was freezing temperatures and ice had built up on the mirrors (real temperatures were in the high 80's) so a safety mechanism kicked in to stop the mirror from being electronically adjusted and not burn out the motor. They fixed it by resetting the computer.

My question = has anyone experienced this electrical glitch and did it go away? I am afraid that this might turn into a re-ocurring gremlin.

Is resetting the computer a dealer-only kind of thing?

THANKS!

so that's what it was!!! i just experienced this yesterday. i've been driving the car and when i got home. i always park my car backwards(facing the street) in the garage. so when i shifted to reverse the right side mirror didn't move which is supposed to automatically adjust itself downward so you can view the curb and not hit the curb with you rims right. and then tried adjusting the mirror from the controls and the damn thing wont move! so i tried the other mirror and no movement at all. i thought there was an electrical problem so i turn the engine on and off for i think 4 times and at the 4th time everything was back to normal.

temperature is at the high 70's when this thing happened. first time i've experienced this and the car had only less than 700miles.

I wonder then if waiting say 2 minutes and starting your car resets the computer governing the mirrors. What a pain! I hope this is a one time thing.

actually the reverse tilt-down thing only works if the switch is in the drivers position (i believe) - if it's int he passenger position it won't auto-tilt. I think that's what you are talking about.

* it might be the other way around, but if it doesn't tilt in reverse, try changing the switch over and it should do it.

tried that and it didn't work. i even tried adjusting both mirrors and none of the side mirrors moved. so i guess that was right it probably was the sensor... maybe for some reason it did register the temp inside the car since i had the a/c on full blast.

do you have the OBC? does the outside temp gauge read correctly? sorry can't be of much help.

I also experienced the exact same problem this afternoon, and it was my first time too. I won't repeat again but the symptom was exactly the same as the quote above - the right mirror didn't move when shifted to reverse, and both mirrors didn't work when adjusted. I parked the car and went to the mall for about an hour. When I came back, everything was back to normal. Outside temperature was about 80's, and the car is 2 1/2 months old with 2000 miles.

Good grief - sounds like a problem with the 2003 computer:thumbdwn: I think I am going to register the complaint with the dealer and if it happens again - I'm going to want this replaced under warranty.
