Like many, my '94 525iT has the VANOS "growl." Is there an adjuster for the timing chain that is accessible without dismantling things? I see a plug on the lower passenger side of the timing chain cover and wonder whether this allows any adjustment.

The plug looks like part 14 on this schematic...

Thanks.

No adjustment that I am aware of. However the assembly and spring is farily cheap and may affect tension on the timing chain. I replaced mine a ocuple of years ago. Bought parts from BMA. Seemed to be slightly less noisy.

How involved was the repair work?

check into Dr. Vanos kits, maybe?

This is why i love my 92... no vanos = no vanos issues! the loss of 10-15lbs of midrange torque are so worth it to me.

If you are refering to my post. It took about 15 minutes to remove the tensioner/spring combo and install new parts.
