View Full Version : Ignition Switch Issues...

Lately, when starting up my '91 525i, I've noticed I've got to turn the ignition key fully, and I mean fully to the back of the detent or switch before the starter motor engages. I'm getting nervous that one day in the not-too-near-distant future, that I'll put in the key, turn it as far as it goes and nothing is going to happen...I'll sorta be 1 mm shy of the place where the key and switch fire up the motor. Everything else work just fine. Is the ignition switch in need of replacement? Appreciate anyone's thoughts.

Couldnt hurt. Catch it now before you get stuck somewhere.

Same symptoms my car exhibited before the ignition lock broke. There is a flimsy link that is flexing, causing the odd action, it will break.
When it breaks you will not be able to start it or unlock the wheel. It's a moderately easy DIY and the part is ~$100. Search for a write up.
Getting the lock cylinder out is the trickiest part, the security bolts aren't that tight, use a sharp chisel to turn them a bit and they back right out.
Do it before you are stranded.
