thanks!

i am going to see the car today and he is asking 6800 so if i can talk
him down to 5800 or so i think i will go for it but if not i will just have
to wait it out or buy a different car, which is a shame i really had my
heart set on an e36 m

Don't be a PRICE SUCKER. The big deal on any M3 is how well it has been maintained. I would rather buy a car that has great maintenance then a garage queen anytime.
As mentioned read the sticky above.
However at 150K you should expect to have a few things that will bug your from time to time but not cost an arm and a leg.
I am making an assumption that this car has had a recent cooling system component change:
water pump
t stat
tstat housing unless already aluminum
hoses
belts
maybe a radiator too (they are not expensive, OEM is like 150-160 bucks)
Good struts and shocks
Good brake pads, rotors

What to check that is not usually done?
Check the subframe floor under the car where the diff mounts to the unibody carefully with a flashlight for any sheet metal tears or rips.
Check the rear shock mount where it mounts into the body for any looseness or metal tears.

The service records are key to what to pay. A car that has had good service will treat you well vs one that has had shoddy or incomplete maintenance.

The small things that will bug you will be things like the HVAC having a mind of your own. This is a capacitor issue caused by a cracked PCB board. It is not that big a deal. Maybe some power dock locks and window issues from time to time, brake light switch failure, again a cheap part and not that hard to replace if you are nimble.

The engine and transmission should go 250K or more with regular service without issues.

Hope this helps some.

It seems that no matter what forum I go to there is always someone exposing "wholesale" auction prices. Just because you have access to MMR doesn't mean it is helpful for an online community to share the numbers. I am an auto broker for a living and I have not run across one good E36 M3 at an auction that didn't need an enormous amount of reconditioning to bring up to retail or even private party standards, that makes the numbers you posted useless to someone looking for a good driver. Those numbers also don't represent the auction buy fees, transportation costs, and any other fees associated with buying a car with a wholesale license. My suggestion to you would be to keep this information to yourself unless you were at the given auction a specific car sold for and can explain why it sold for said amount, without an explanation you are just barfing information you copyied and pasted from a site that is supposed to be for dealers only.
