OK guys...I am in some serious need of some experienced direction! I am hoping there is someone out there with an XI (with a GM tranny) that has already changed their ATF which can give me some guidance. The other GM trannys might be the same...but i'm sorry I don't know. Anyone with advice and experience PLEASE CHIME IN!

I tried to change my ATF this weekend...but I didn't. I didn't do it because when I got under the car, I could not get to the fill plug. So, without draining any AFT for fear of not being able to refill it...I didn't do anything. I had a bit of a problem figuring out which plug it was that was supposed to be used for filling. One of the plugs was around a 30Torq bit and it had a sticker over the plug. This plug was on the drivers side of the tranny. On the passenger side of the tranny there was a regular bolt-style plug which was on the same side of the tranny as the gear-selector. Based on my Bentley manual...........I couldn't figure out which plug I was supposed to take out. My instincts told me that it was the Torq plug because it had the sticker on it. I chose that one because I figured two things: 1) BMW trannys claim lifetime fluid and if its changed or tampered with, the warranty is voided...therefore a sticker over the plug would show tampering AND 2) I used my best "cyferin" skills from lookin at the pictures in my Bentley manual.

I really hope that you can tell me that I am wrong about the Torq plug, and that I am actually supposed to be using the bolt-style plug on the passenger side of the car...closer to the rear of the tranny. Otherwise...I am going to have to drop the driveshaft out of the way because I cant get to the Torq plug. The driveshaft is too close to the tranny on that side and I can't get a bit in there. ARGH!!! What is your experience with your Xi?

Cheers,

how to link my thread from 9/3/07 to this post I would, but..
You have to drop the driveshaft, but after that it's pretty straightforward.
Just be sure the vehicle is SOLIDLY supported. Good luck.

plmbst,

Thank you for your post. I found out the hard way that you had to drop the driveshaft. It wasn't too hard to do (fortunately). I AM curious as to how you filled our tranny. Did you use a pump? Or did you use the tube method as I did? I am curious as to which way is the easiest because my way was NOT easy!

Cheers,

Very inexpensive pump that screws onto a one gallon wiper fluid bottle, sorry I don't remember where i bought it.

OK...I have one of those. I just chose to use the tube method because I thought the pump would have gotten reeeeeally old after about 12 pumps...:dunno:
