Hey there,

I have some dark brown (about the color of week old coffee skum with a little cream). Same residue is inside the valve cover vent where the filler cap lives. I am worried that it has a blown head gasket or another cooling system leak.

My car is 1998 328I with 140K miles that I am sorting out for my sister.

She reports that last summer the car did not overheat; but it barfed out some coolent after a really hot drive (110F ambient 40 minute mountain drive to Santa Cruz CA Hy17) She "topped" off the coolent and it continued to barf coolent on a sporatic basis days afterwards.

I just drove it from San Jose to Roseville CA (65F ambient and temp guage stayed rock solid in the center. And the engine idles and runs perfectly.

Have you done a leak down test? Anybody on here can speculate, but the only real way to know is to get the motor tested.

Good luck.

Good idea, I can work on that this weekend. Basically I am just looking for each cylinder to hold pressure for about the same amount of time?
