coolant question? [Archive] - bimmerfest

I had a leak today and I'm afraid its the dreaded water pump.

Is the plastic jacket the radiator hose connects to part of the water pump or is it a separate piece?

Also, where can I get one at a reasonable price?

The plastic jacket is the thermostat housing. Personally I upgraded to an aluminum housing from pelican.

Has anyone actually changed this on their car?

I'm having some problems getting the fan off. I know its a left hand thread, but I can't seem to hold the pulley in place while I turn the nut.

Any ideas?

There is a special tool made for this procedure... Granted very few of us use it. Personally I used small pry bar, and wedged it across the pulley bolts. I've heard of some people using vise grips on the belt to keep the pulley from spinning.(I'm not sure I'd recommend that method)
