Okay I'm having some trouble finding my microfilter and I'm beginning to wonder if my car even has one. Its a 91 525i and I went by http://bmw4life.com/microFilter.htm but mine seems to be different then the pictures. Here is what mine looks like from the glove box view.

Your car does not have one, it came on the later e34 cars.

Well son of a .... I guess that filter is getting sent back to Pelican Parts. What filters my air and keeps nasty crap out of my car? Thats odd since http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HD53&mospid=47404&btnr=64_0156&hg=64&fg=10 says the filter is from 06/90 and up. Obviously this parts list lookup by VIN isn't quite as smart as I thought. I guess it was the Evaporator Cover I removed on the side hoping to find the filter, there was some nasty stuff in there and it looked like something had leaked a little or something in the bottom of the cover.

Nothing really to filter your air... its just like my 91 325ic... When I got it back from paint I turned on the vents only to have dust and paint chips fly out of the vents in my face. Realoem also lists that filter for my car, but my car does not have the option.

I'm guessing there is no way to add the option? Would be nice if you could just change out part of the cover and it would connect right up.

There might be... but it would be far easier to just put some mr coffee filters in your vents :)

 That would look bad...I can just see someone with mr. coffee filters on all the vents. Yeah looks like they didn't come along until 9/91 http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10219222&postcount=12 I'm just curious as to whether it could be switched to accept the filter housing part from a 92 without having to remove or do anything to the evaporator and everything down there.

nope. you'd have to change the entire thing out.

Can't be done without pulling alot of stuff out like the evaporator and all out of there can it? It looked as if that would probably have to be removed.

CJ,

I too have an early e34 without the microfilter. The fan seems to be stuck, anyway, it won't run. Pulling the glove bos might be a way to see if there is something jamming the fan, but I need to know if you saw the fan or motor when you did your investigation. Thanks.

The fan is easier to get to from the engine compartment.

thanks bimmerdot, in my case it is not easier to get to through the engine compartment. There is a corroded screw that I cannot turn, so I will need to break apart the cover inside the compartment, to go in that way. Anyway, all I want to do is see if the fan can be turned by hand, or if there is any debris.

If you can not turn the screw grind the head off or drill and use an extractor.

Dude, please. I was born at night, just not last night. First of all the screw head is recessed, and I can't get at with a grinder. Second, there isn't a straght shot to get at it with a drill bit. I don't really need any more suggestions how to do what is not needed, anyway. I would just like to know if there is access to the fan from inside the car. I know it's hard to tell that from my postings. Thanks anyway.

To get to it from inside the car you will need to remove almost the entire hvac system.

Remove almost the entire hvac system? Is that what is required just for changing the microfilter?

Bimmerdotinfo knows what he's talking about. Changing the microfilter is fairly easy as you can see here http://bmw4life.com/microFilter.htm but you cannot see the fan. Perhaps you can get a drill with a angle attachment to get the screw out? But to pull that fan out of the car you'd have to be disconnecting parts for the ac like the evaporator and more that sit under the dash. Good luck getting that screw out. Keep us updated and we'll try to help you out as much as we can.

Yeah those silly German engineers were a bit crazy putting it on the outside and then recessing the screws. Perhaps there used to be covers on them to keep them from corroding
